Kafka’s first entry in Notebook One of his diaries at an early stage in his development as a writer, briefly refers to a film and its effect on the audience.1 The early impact of film was often notably dramatic: upon seeing the Lumière brothers’ short film of an oncoming train2, it is reported that the audience in the movie theaters did not become stiff but rather jumped out of their seats. They “are said to have stampeded at the sight of the locomotive barreling toward them from a distant prospect into the foreground of the screen” (Cook 11). When Kafka recollected the shock the moving images aroused in the viewer he might well have been recalling his own vision recorded five years earlier in his famous letter to Oscar Pollak. There he announced the effect the written word was to achieve in the reader, “we need the books that affect us like a disaster [...]. Trains and machines in Kafka relate to traffic.
The Trial The Trial (original German title: Der Process,[1] later Der Prozess, Der Proceß and Der Prozeß) is a novel written by Franz Kafka in 1914 and 1915 but not published until 1925. One of Kafka's best-known works, it tells the story of a man arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, with the nature of his crime revealed to neither him nor the reader. Like Kafka's other novels, The Trial was never completed, although it does include a chapter which brings the story to an end. After Kafka's death in 1924 his friend and literary executor Max Brod edited the text for publication by Verlag Die Schmiede. He spent 5 hours shooting the supermoon eclipse. When he finally posted, the Internet went wild. Dallas-based photographer Mike Mezeul II has captured a lot of phenomenal images in the sky in his career. He's photographed the stars... He's even captured the fabled double rainbow! So naturally, his gear was at the ready for the recent lunar double-whammy — the 33-year return of the supermoon total lunar eclipse. In an interview with Upworthy, Mezeul (who's also a friend of mine) explained that he was actually a little anxious as he tracked the night sky for those five hours: "I was honestly very hesitant that the image would even happen. Time wasted? Mezeul's photograph took just a little longer to share because he was creating a composite image that shows all of the eclipse phases at once. The Architecture of Complexity - Culture and Organization - Volume 9, Issue 2 In this paper we reflect on organizational space and its implications for organization and management. In contrast to dominant discourse in management and organization theory we address the ways in which corporate buildings, as social objects, provide a materiality to organization. Developing the concept of the architecture of complexity, we focus on space as the precondition of processes of organizing. The productive power of space lies in its potential to create and trigger complexity, as it pre-structures movement and flows of communication. Reflecting on two concrete spatial organizations (the fold and heterotopia) we suggest that the interplay of order and disorder and inside/outside relation, which these spaces provide, are spatial preconditions of organizational change and creativity.
