Astronauts Tackle Air Leak On International Space Station Image copyright NASA Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) are having to deal with an air leak from a possible collision. It has been traced to a small hole in a capsule that was used to deliver a new crew to the laboratory 400km (250 miles) above the Earth in June. It is thought the damage was caused by the impact of a high-speed rocky fragment flying through space. Mission controllers in Houston, Texas, and Russia's capital, Moscow, say the six-strong crew are in no danger. UK Households Face Squeeze After Surprise Inflation Jump To 2.7% UK inflation unexpectedly rose to the highest level in six months in August, pushed up by the rising cost of theatre tickets and high street shops launching their new-season autumn clothing ranges. The Office for National Statistics said the consumer price index (CPI) jumped to 2.7% last month from 2.5% in July, confounding economists’ forecasts for the rate to fall to 2.4%. The surprise increase will prove unwelcome for hard-pressed British households, which had finally begun to see wages rising above inflation earlier this year, following a protracted squeeze on living standards triggered by the Brexit vote. Workers’ pay rises are gradually increasing, although they remain perilously close to inflation. The latest labour market figures showed total pay including bonuses rose by 2.9% in the three months to July.

'Decades Of Denial': Major Report Finds New Zealand's Environment Is In Serious Trouble A report on the state of New Zealand’s environment has painted a bleak picture of catastrophic biodiversity loss, polluted waterways and the destructive rise of the dairy industry and urban sprawl. Environment Aotearoa is the first major environmental report in four years, and was compiled using data from Statistics New Zealand and the environment ministry. It presents a sobering summary of a country that is starkly different from the pristine landscape promoted in the “Pure New Zealand” marketing campaign that lures millions of tourists every year. It found New Zealand is now considered one of the most invaded countries in the world, with 75 animal and plant species having gone extinct since human settlement. The once-vibrant bird life has fared particularly badly, with 90% of seabirds and 80% of shorebirds threatened with or at risk of extinction.

Facebook funds AI mind-reading experiment Image copyright UCSF Facebook has announced a breakthrough in its plan to create a device that allows people to type just by thinking. It has funded a study that developed machine-learning algorithms capable of turning brain activity into speech It worked on epilepsy patients who had already had recording electrodes placed on their brains to asses the origins of their seizures, ahead of surgery. Facebook hopes it will pave the way for a "fully non-invasive, wearable device" that can process 100 words per minute. 'Muscle twitches'
