Native Americans - Origins Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492 - Wrong! Christopher Columbus was the first European to set foot in the country that was to be called America - Right! There is a huge difference between the two statements above. The North American continent had been inhabited for thousands of years before Europeans 'discovered' it and settled there. It is believed that the first people to inhabit North America were Asian in origin. It is believed that they made the journey from Asia to Alaska by crossing the Bering Strait during the Ice Age (at least 10,000 years ago) The picture (above) shows the location of the Bering Strait and an artist’s impression of travellers crossing during the Ice Age Over a period of time these people migrated further and further south. The Arrival of Europeans When the first Europeans arrived in North America they believed they were in India and named the natives Indians, the name was to stick for nearly 500 years. United States For centuries native peoples lived across the vast expanse that would become the United States. Starting in the 16th century, settlers moved from Europe to the New World, established colonies, and displaced these native peoples. Explorers arrived from Spain in 1565 at St. Augustine, Florida, and the British landed in 1587 to establish a colony in Roanoke, in present-day Virginia. In 1606 another British colony was established in what would become Jamestown, Virginia. Conflict with the Native Americans While Native Americans resisted European efforts to gain land and power, they were often outnumbered and didn’t have as powerful of weapons. During this time, fights between the settlers and Native Americans erupted often, particularly as more people claimed land where the Native Americans lived. For example, in 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, which granted land west of the Mississippi River to Native American tribes who agreed to give up their lands.

Children younger than five can go to a nursery school or preschool. At the age of five or six, the children attend elementary school (also known as grade school or grammar school), which last six years. After elementary school, students attend middle school (also known as junior high school) for three years. When students in the USA say what year they are in, they usually use ordinal numbers, e. g.
