No grades, no timetable: Berlin school turns teaching upside down

No grades, no timetable: Berlin school turns teaching upside down
Anton Oberländer is a persuasive speaker. Last year, when he and a group of friends were short of cash for a camping trip to Cornwall, he managed to talk Germany’s national rail operator into handing them some free tickets. So impressed was the management with his chutzpah that they invited him back to give a motivational speech to 200 of their employees. Anton, it should be pointed out, is 14 years old. The Berlin teenager’s self-confidence is largely the product of a unique educational institution that has turned the conventions of traditional teaching radically upside down. The school’s syllabus reads like any helicopter parent’s nightmare. “Look at three or four year olds – they are all full of self-confidence,” Rasfeld says. The Evangelical School Berlin Centre (ESBC) is trying to do nothing less than “reinvent what a school is”, she says. Given its word-of-mouth success, it is little wonder that there have been calls for Rasfeld’s approach to go nationwide.

3 Ways to Share Your Reading Life with Students If we expect our students to become lifelong readers, we need to model that in our own lives. There are so many different ways we can share our reading life with students. One-on-one conversations are always ideal, but it can be difficult to talk with each and every one of our students. Some of these methods are more effective for sharing with students. Display books you’ve read This is one of my favorite methods of sharing my reading life with students. Create an e-mail signature If your students don’t have e-mail addresses, this one won’t reach them. The Higher Education and Research Bill is due to be read for the third time in the House of Lords, where peers will vote on their amended version. Although this is the final reading of the bill in the Lords, its parliamentary journey may not be over. This is because of the likely prospect of much back and forth between the Lords and Commons – known as parliamentary “ping-pong”. While that plays out, here’s an update on what’s happened so far. What is the bill? The Higher Education and Research Bill aims to improve competition and choice in higher education. It follows on from the white paper, Success as a Knowledge Economy, and sets out the government’s plans to reform the organisation and regulation of the sector. These changes include making it easier for new providers to offer degrees alongside existing universities. What is the Teaching Excellence Framework? But the government wants the TEF results to do more than this. Why is it so controversial? What are the changes? What happens next?

Innovations pédagogiques dans l’enseignement supérieur francophone Be smart; say, “thank you” when you’re invited to someone’s LinkedIn network | Things Career Related It’s well worth repeating the importance of showing your gratitude for being inviting to someone’s network, especially if you’ve received a thoughtful, personalized note–not the default message LinkedIn provides. In a previous entry I ranted about how sending a thoughtful invite on LinkedIn, instead of the “cold,” “lazy,” “uninviting” default message, is necessary to make a good impression on the potential connection. Now I’d like to remind those who have received the proper invite to say, “Thank you.” If you receive an invitation to be part of someone’s network, reply to the sender by thanking him/her for being considered. It’s an honor the sender has chosen you, so show your gratitude. In effect, this is similar to walking away from a conversation at a social gathering. What to Write. And if I want to carry on the conversation, I will add, “It would be great to talk about our common interests, as we’re both in (the occupation). What to Write.
