CfA Opportunities: Visiting Scientist and Visiting Student Program The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory has a Visiting Scientist and Visiting Student Program to expand scholarly exchange in atomic and molecular physics; infrared, optical, radio, and X-ray astronomy; planetary sciences; geophysics; solar and stellar physics; and theoretical astrophysics. Visits can vary from a few days to several weeks or months and, in some cases, last up to a year. This program annually attracts many international and national visitors. Stipend support varies with the length of the visit and the amount of support being provided by the visitor's home institution, or by fellowships such as a Guggenheim or from NATO, etc. Application to the program is made by directly contacting a member of the research staff to request support. Awards are dependent upon availability of funding.

Platform: Under the Hood (Part 2) This post is the second in a series of articles that will be devoted to explaining the Ushahidi Platform at a technical level for programmers and deployers. In the last blog post, we explored how the architecture of the Ushahidi Platform is radically changing from v2 to v3. In this post, I will detail the different types of objects that make up the new architecture and what their role is within the system. If we refer back to the diagram that illustrates the Clean Architecture, the very center is consists of the Entities, followed by the Use Cases layer, and then the layer of Gateways, Controllers, and Presenters. The Helix Nebula: Unraveling at the Seams A dying star is throwing a cosmic tantrum in this combined image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), which NASA has lent to the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. In death, the star's dusty outer layers are unraveling into space, glowing from the intense ultraviolet radiation being pumped out by the hot stellar core. This object, called the Helix nebula, lies 650 light-years away, in the constellation of Aquarius. Also known by the catalog number NGC 7293, it is a typical example of a class of objects called planetary nebulae.

The Great Attractor The Question (Submitted September 24, 1999) The great attractor has been described as an agglomeration of matter. What would it look like, a galaxy ? What are its proportions and what are its effects on the Milky Way and other local galaxies. The Answer Aboriginal Culture - Aboriginal Religion and Ceremony Aboriginal Religion Aboriginal Ceremony. Aboriginal religion, like many other religions, is characterised by having a god or gods who created people and the surrounding environment during a particular creation period at the beginning of time. Aboriginal people are very religious and spiritual, but rather than praying to a single god they cannot see, each group generally believes in a number of different deities, whose image is often depicted in some tangible, recognisable form. This form may be that of a particular landscape feature, an image in a rock art shelter, or in a plant or animal form. Wandjina bring the Wet Season rains to the people of the Kimberley.

Great Attractor Panoramic view of the entire near-infrared sky. The location of the Great Attractor is shown following the long blue arrow at bottom-right. The Hubble Telescope turned its lens to the region of the sky where the Great Attractor is located. The Great Attractor is a gravity anomaly in intergalactic space within the range of the Hydra-Centaurus Supercluster that reveals the existence of a localized concentration of mass equivalent to tens of thousands of galaxies, each of which represents the mass of the Milky Way; this mass is observable by its effect on the motion of galaxies and their associated clusters over a region hundreds of millions of light-years across.
