Jokainen kulttuuri, joka kadottaa keskeiset päämäärämerkityksensä ja yhdessä tekemisen mielen, joutuu lopulta kokonaisvaltaiseen kriisiin. Näin kävi 1930-luvun Saksassa, jossa merkityksestä tyhjentyneiden sääntöjen seuraaminen johti viime kädessä järjestelmällisille tuhoamisleireille. Näin kävi Neuvostoliitossa, jossa työtoverit muuttuivat ilmiantajiksi ja naapurukset urkkijoiksi. Näin on yhä nopeammin käymässä myös 2010-luvun Suomessa. Merkityskato ilmenee aluksi koulutuksessa ja terveydenhoidossa. Päämäärämerkitysten tehtävä on sitoa yhteen käytäntöjä, säännöstöjä, tapoja ja työnjaon periaatteita. Kun päämäärämerkitys heikkenee, sen vallitessa kehitetyt prosessit alkavat etääntyä toisistaan. Prosesseja hallinnoivat ihmiset menettävät käsityksen siitä, että prosessien tehtävä on palvella yhteistä hyvää. Nyky-Suomessa on useita konkreettisia esimerkkejä tällaisesta merkityskadosta. Yliopistolaitoksen johtava päämäärä on totuus.

We should express our disapproval by divesting, they argue, and help to build momentum for carbon regulation and cleaner energy sources. But what if fossil fuels are just bad investments? What if oil, gas, and coal companies have sunk billions of dollars into buying up the rights to carbon fuels that they will never actually be able to extract? That’s what a growing band of financiers argue, and the people who follow their investment advice are benefiting from it. In order to meet the international goal of keeping global warming below 2 degrees Celsius, 60 to 80 percent of fossil fuel reserves held by publicly traded corporations cannot be burned. The combination of these trends makes the long-term outlook for fossil fuel companies very bad, according to some analysts.

Hillary Clinton Calls for Federal Investigation of Exxon In response to a question posed at White Mountains Community College in New Hampshire, Hillary Clinton called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate Exxon: “Yes, yes they should … there’s a lot of evidence they misled people.” With Clinton’s statement, all Democratic presidential candidates have now called for a federal investigation of Exxon. Earlier this month, Senator Sanders sent a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch asking for the DOJ to form a task force by Dec. 19 to investigate Exxon. Governor O’Malley also voiced his support for an investigation on Twitter. We held tobacco companies responsible for lying about cancer. Clinton joins a growing chorus of elected officials calling for Exxon to be investigated. Earlier today, Senators Whitehouse, Markey, Warren and Blumenthal sent a letter to Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson asking for the company to disclose whether its donations to a financial clearinghouse were used to fund climate denier groups.

Bill McKibben Says the Divestment Movement Is Succeeding — and He May Be Right Nestled in Vermont’s bucolic Champlain valley, Middlebury College is a seedbed of environmental activism. Middlebury students started 350.org, the environmental organization that is fighting climate change and coordinating the global campaign for fossil-fuel divestment. Bill McKibben, the writer and environmentalist who is spearheading the campaign, has taught there since 2001. Yet Middlebury has declined to sell the oil, gas, and coal company holdings in its $1 billion endowment. McKibben’s alma mater, Harvard University — which has a $36 billion endowment, the largest of any university — also has decided not to divest its holdings in fossil fuel companies. Indeed, virtually all of the United States’ wealthiest universities, foundations, and public pension funds have resisted pressures to sell their stakes in fossil fuel companies. Suomalaiset vaatejätit petraavat valvontaansa köyhien maiden tehtaissa Kyselyssä yrityksiltä kysyttiin muun muassa, missä tehtaat sijaitsevat ja miten niiden oloja valvotaan. Kysely tehtiin kahdelletoista yritykselle, joista kaikki vastasivat. Mukana oli muun muassa Stockmann, Kesko ja Marimekko. Kyselyn tuloksia voit tarkastella täällä tai ladata ne omalle koneellesi täältä. Suurin osa kyselyyn vastanneista yrityksistä tukeutuu alihankintatehtaidensa olojen kehittämisessä kansainväliseen BSCI-järjestelmään. So it was with great interest that I sat down to watch Fox’s latest coverage of Google’s plan to someday rank search engine results not by “popularity” but “accuracy.” The network did not disappoint. In a recent edition of Fox News’ Happening Now, the conservative network hastily put together an out-and-out hit piece on Google. “They say you’re entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts. If you’re wondering who they could possibly mean by that, the answer is quickly revealed: Climate deniers. Fox asks regular guest Marc Morano how he feels about Google’s proposal. “Let the public decide what’s the truth,” Morano tells a Fox reporter.
