Lofoten - Arctic Circle Anomaly The archipelago of Lofoten in Norway is north of the Arctic Circle. Yet throughout the year it has temperatures which belie its position. This is because of the largest positive temperature anomaly in the world relative to latitude. It makes Lofoten an unexpected delight – its early settlers must have thought they had stumbled across an arctic paradise. Prepare to have your breath taken away. What they found there was a sea teeming with life and the largest deep water coral reef in the word. The settlers gave one of the islands (now known as Vestvågøya) the name Lofoten which is Norse for the foot of the lynx. The first settlers must have arrived here centuries before but the archipelago, because of its climate, has been the center of huge cod fisheries for over a millennia. People were drawn to the area mostly because of the sea life. As time went on Lofoten became the name for the whole chain of islands. The place is so far north that here you can experience the midnight sun.

Despite visiting Pictured Rocks several times, I had never hiked this section of the Lakeshore Trail so it was nice to see some new scenery. Lake Superior was actually reasonably warm so I got to go for a swim on Mosquito Beach which was very nice. The view towards Miners Beach. Looking southwest from Indian Head. 102-Year-Old Lens Plus Canon 5D Mark II Equals Instant Vintage Photos Photographer Timur Civan had a project that required vintage-looking photographs. Originally planning to shoot the project on a 4×5 large format camera, he abandoned that route after calculating the cost for equipment and processing. His lens technician friend then discovered a 1908 Wollensak 35mm F5.0 Cine-Velostigmat hand-cranked lens in a box of spare parts, and spent 6 hours helping him make the lens fit on an EF mount for Civan’s 5D Mark II. 3D Paintings on Panes of Glass - StumbleUpon Using multiple layers of clear glass, Canada based David Spriggs and Chinese born Xia Xiaowan, transform flat artwork into 3D sculptures. Viewers are treated to different shifting perspectives of the works based on where they stand in the art space. Spriggs work revolves around powerful explosive imagery, often resembling storms, cosmic blasts or firework like explosions. Xiawan’s “spatial paintings,” which often feature distorted figures, are drawn individually using colored pencil on tinted glass. banksy versus bristol museum a few years ago i attended an uh-mazing banksy exhibition in downtown los angeles and have been eagerly awaiting the elusive graffiti artist's return. alas, mr. bansky choose instead to set up his latest wares in new york and bristol. on june 13th, banksy's largest exhibition entitled "banksy versus bristol museum" was unveiled at the bristol city museum. it features more than 100 of banksy's works mixed amongst the museum's permanent collection (including a mouse with a backpack tucked inside of a natural history case. someone, please send me a picture! check out the mouse here. thanks, matt, more the picture!). on opening day, a line of eager fans snaked around the corner, waiting more than an hour for admission. and finally, a picasso banksy WHORANGE philosophy... {images via art of the state, nikolaasB, and the guardian uk.} UPDATE!
