When writing a paper, a novel or even an e-mail, you might look at a sentence you just wrote and think, “Is that comma supposed to be there?” or “Is that really the best word to use?” Fear not! First, let’s look at the often-confusing comma. What about the Oxford comma? Now, take an adjective such as “implacable” or a verb like “proliferate” or even another noun “crony,” and add a suffix, such as “-ity” or “-tion” or “-ism.” Finally, when it comes to good writing, don’t take the easy route!

How to Get Your Students Writing with Only 6 Words We’ve all been told we need to bring writing into our art rooms. But, it can be difficult to find both the time and a way to create a meaningful connection between the two disciplines. A few years ago, I came across the idea of 6-word stories and decided to give them a try in my classroom. The premise, which is to write a story using only six words, seemed like it might work well for our limited amount of time together. I had no idea if it would work well or not. Although my students balked a bit at first, once they gave it a try, the results were wonderful. Since then, I’ve used 6-word stories in a variety of ways in my classroom, from get-to-know-you activities and exit tickets to tools for review and artist statements. Here’s everything you need to know to start using 6-word stories in your classroom. Start by introducing the concept of 6-word stories to your students. There is an urban legend that writer Ernest Hemingway made a bet that he could compose a novel using just six words.

Local Hero Local Hero is a 1983 British comedy-drama film written and directed by Bill Forsyth and starring Peter Riegert, Denis Lawson, Fulton Mackay, and Burt Lancaster. Responding to students’ writing | elt-resourceful I have called this post responding to writing, rather than error correction on writing, as I believe that there is a lot more to responding to written work than simply correcting errors. To begin with, it is very important to respond to the content of the writing as well as the form. It is, I think, important that we look at the questions further up the list, as well as picking out discrete errors with word choice, agreement, spelling and so on. When students give peer feedback on each other’s work there is also a strong tendency to concentrate on discrete items, such as grammar and spelling, rather than looking at the whole. In the learning of a second language, this is a question that stirs up great controversy. While it is true that most spelling errors will disappear as learner proficiency increases, there are some persistent errors – mainly grammatical – which remain despite repeated efforts to correct them. In the following collection of error-correction activities for writing, the main aim is to get students to identify and correct writing errors taken from their own essays.
