Alida Bothma - Fine Art The artist grew up in Pretoria, after which she obtained a diploma in Graphic Design at the art school of the Cape Town Technikon, with distinctions in drawing, graphic art and history of art. Her career started as an illustrator in an advertising agency in Cape Town. Her first international exposure was in 1979, when some of her work was included in a watercolour exhibition in West Germany, with other South African artists like Walter Battiss, Maud Sumner, Adolph Jentsch and Andrew Verster. Her involvement in illustrating children’s books, which later extended to poetry and other books, began in the early 1980’s and now stretches over about 150 books. She uses a variety of media and techniques, such as ink, charcoal, mixed media, oil, acrylics, pastel and watercolour. National Exhibitions Her work has been exhibited all over South Africa, with solo exhibitions in Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Oudtshoorn and Kimberley. Many pin-ups were photographs of celebrities who were considered sex symbols. Other pin-ups were artwork, often depicting idealized versions of what some thought a particularly beautiful or attractive woman should look like. The genre also gave rise to several well-known artists specializing in the field, one of whom was the American painter and illustrator Gil Elvgren. Gil Elvgren was one of the most important pin-up and glamour artists of the twentieth century. Elvgren was a commercial success. This gallery shows some of his artwork of pin-up girls and the photos he used as reference.
