Un réservoir d'images du domaine public Internet Archive, projet d'archivage du web initié en 1996 par Brewster Kahle, met également gratuitement à disposition des internautes de très nombreuses ressources multimédia (texte, image, audio, vidéo) « libres » et/ou « tombées » dans le domaine public. Un chercheur à l'Université de Georgetown, Kalev Leetaru, a développé une application lui permettant d'extraire plus de 14 millions d'images à partir de 2 millions d'ouvrages numérisés disponibles via Internet Archive. Ces illustrations sont peu à peu diffusées sur la plateforme Flickr. Chaque image est documentée de manière détaillée : titre du livre, auteur, année de publication, éditeur, légende, tags. Pour chaque image, la mention « Aucune restriction de droits d’auteur connue » s'affiche sur la droite.
