Celly instantly transforms a classroom into a private communication network where teachers and students can stay connected inside and outside the classroom. Teachers and students can create any number of study group cells to communicate about For example, teachers can instigate discussion topics, post links to relevant information, and offer suggestions. Classmates can stay connected beyond school hours to coordinate activities and collaborate on homework. Cells provide a persistent activity stream that can be searched as a reference. Phone numbers are kept private and are never exchanged between users so teachers and students can communicate safely without privacy issues. http://cel.ly/school

http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2011/04/benefits-of-social-media-for-teachers.html Developing an online PLN and the benefits of doing so is something that I've written about more than a handful of times over the last couple of years. My favorite post on the topic is this one in which my PLN gave me a great assist when one of my lesson plans was falling flat on its face. I realize that not everyone has the time I have to participate in social media and I know that participating in online communities isn't something everyone enjoys. Even if you don't have the time or aren't comfortable posting in online communities, you can still benefit from having familiarity with social media. What is social media?

Parent Advice - Social Networking Tips - Common Sense Media

Posts, status updates, comments, instant messages, video uploads, tweets, and texts have become a regular part of our kids' lives. In today's 24/7 digital world, kids are logging on from everywhere, including smartphones, gaming devices, tablets, and laptops, and many parents simply don't know what their kids are up to, much less much about the social media they're using. The reality is that most kids start developing online relationships around the age of 8, usually through virtual worlds like Club Penguin . By age 10, they've progressed to multiplayer games and sharing their digital creations and homemade videos on sites like YouTube . http://www.commonsensemedia.org/advice-for-parents/social-networking-tips

2. List of Twitter Commands [splitbrain.org]

During the last months, Twitter became a fixed part of my online activities. It's a convenient way to stay in contact with people around the world. There are multiple ways to twitter.
Edmodo is probably most easily described as being a child-friendly version of Facebook designed specially for schools. For the past few months I do admit to becoming a bit concerned about the number of pupils I was hearing about in school who are on Facebook - especially when I know that they will have broken its terms and conditions by lying and pretending that they are over 13 years old when registering. I do teach e-safety lessons fairly regularly but I always think that it's a fine line I have to draw between teaching them how to work with a site that they shouldn't be on in the first place (thus promoting it in a way) and teaching them good e-safety behaviours in general. I originally signed up to Edmodo two years following @markw29 's recommendation.

Social Collider: ready to collide

The Social Collider reveals cross-connections between conversations on Twitter. With the Internet's promise of instant and absolute connectedness, two things appear to be curiously underrepresented: both temporal and lateral perspective of our data-trails. Yet, the amount of data we are constantly producing provides a whole world of contexts, many of which can reveal astonishing relationships if only looked at through time. This experiment explores these possibilities by starting with messages on the microblogging-platform Twitter. One can search for usernames or topics, which are tracked through time and visualized much like the way a particle collider draws pictures of subatomic matter.
