Information on hundreds of thousands of salmon in both countries is now being fed into a state-of-the-art database which can make quicker and more exact decisions on pairing individual fish. The process is accelerating genetic advances by producing more robust offspring that grow faster and are less susceptible to disease. Dr Alan Tinch, director of genetics at Landcatch, which has its headquarters in Ormsary in Argyll, said: “We now have the ability to use information in all three programmes to make more accurate decisions on the selection of fish. That’s something unique.” Dr Tinch said the database effectively acts as a large and complex ‘dating agency’.

“In this way the next generation of fish is better in a number of respects than before – faster growing, more disease resistant, with improved fat content and better eating quality. "We've seen a significant increase in fish production in recent years but it should be more. The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) has established a special award to recognise and reward innovative practices that overcome production challenges or mitigate negative environmental or social impacts at aquaculture farms certified under the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) program. The inaugural Global Aquaculture Innovation Award program - sponsored by Novus International - was announced on November 1, 2012 during GAA’s GOAL 2012 conference in Bangkok, Thailand. Innovations can span the full range of farm activities, including wetlands conservation, feed management, water-quality management, effluent reduction, energy reduction, staff training, community relations, animal welfare, and health and nutrition. Three finalists will be invited and paid by Novus to attend a semifinalist summit at the company’s St. Charles, Missouri, headquarters in the summer of 2013. The award is open to all producers with active BAP certification.

Video: Closed containment pens. 6th International Algae Congress - Present and potential industrial applications. Microalgae have been of major interest for producing biofuels in the last decade. Recently, development and focus was changed towards the use of microalgae in the food, feed, materials and chemical sector as well. Microalgae contain high amounts of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates, which all can be used for different markets. For biofuels only microalgae production appears to be too costly but in a biorefinery concept where the different compounds are isolated, algal biofuels remain a feasible option.

Worldwide basic research, pilot and demonstration projects were developed. We are working on the basic aspects to make commercial production of microalgae possible. Til-Aqua Natural Male Tilapia Hatchery. FishOnline. Breeding Tilapia in aquaponics and Tilapia domestic violence. By TCLynx, on February 18th, 2011 This is a follow up to my article about keeping tilapia from breeding. So now that we have talked about how to stop the fish from breeding, how do you get them to breed when you want them to. I’ve read where people will put two females into a 50 gallon aquarium with one male and give him a flower pot as the “love cave” then warm up the temperatures for them.

I believe 86 F is probably needed to get this to work. I never got my aquarium that warm and the females were never in the mood so the male spent most of his time beating them up until I finally separated them. Now if per chance you have two female and one male in a fish tank that does get warm enough for the breeding to get going, there is another domestic tilapia violence issue. I have had fish killed by both of the above Breeding tilapia domestic violence issues. Now the above makes it sound like I never managed to breed any tilapia but I kept killing my breeders.
