Hugelkultur – Idyll on the A406

Pros Nutrients: as the Hügel decomposes it releases all the necessary nutrients for healthy plant growth.Warmth: as it decomposes the Hügel releases heat. Coupled with the mass of the mound and its orientation to the sun this extends the growing season.Self irrigation: the rotting biomass acts as a sponge holding and releasing water for the plants, meaning the Hügel does not need to be watered after the initial first few weeks.Increased growing space: increased planting surface area compared to a regular raised bed.Micro-climates: plants can be sown on the north or south facing side depending on their requirements creating a more versatile space for poly-cropping.Aesthetics: visually the Hügel is a more organic shape when compared to a raised bed. This species should be much more widely grown in the humid tropics. It represents a fully-developed perennial staple crop. Staple fruits provide starch, protein, and fats from fresh fruits. These “superfruits” can and should play an important role in carbon-sequestering agriculture, agroforestry, and productive reforestation efforts. As my standard I determined that fruits should be used as a starchy vegetable or, when fresh, should demonstrate at least 5% protein or fat.
