Vuosaari became one of the focal areas for new housing in Helsinki during the 1990s, when the Meri-Rastila and Kallahti housing developments were built. In the early 2000s, large-scale housing developments have continued to spring up in Rastilankallio, in the Vuosaari town centre, and in Aurinkolahti. In addition to high-rise apartment buildings, small family-housing estates have been and are being built, for instance, in Ramsinranta and Keski-Vuosaari. Helsinki is moving all its cargo port operations to the new harbour currently under construction in Vuosaari.
