Zentangle Newsletter

Here's a small sampling: The more I look at/read The Book of Zentangle, the more I feel the book itself as a Zentangle. I savor the pages, finding something new I hadn't seen before, listening to what it might be asking me to do or see. This beautiful book is more than a story, it's the feeling of Zentangle as only Rick and Maria could express. This wonderful behind-the-scenes look at Zentangle includes the story of its origins, a description of the tools and the method, a discussion of the practice of Zentangle with exercises and projects, and fascinating stories and comments from Rick and Maria themselves.

You have produced a gorgeous, inspiring, wonderful book!!! How to draw WAFT. Here is a really versatile tangle pattern for you to have fun with.

How to draw WAFT

Waft is from new West Virginia tangler, Beth Snoderly and it’s her first on the site. From what I saw on TV yesterday Beth may not even see this for a while as the Appalachian mountains of WV were buried under more than 2 feet of snow in a blizzard spawned from the Superstorm Hurricane Sandy. If you want to see some amazing – and slightly overwhelming – pictures taken after landfall check out this link at The Atlantic magazine, courtesy of my sister Karen. Again, our prayers go out to everyone affected by this truly mind-boggling natural disaster.

Waft‘s inspiration came from a bracelet Beth saw online and she set about deconstructing the pattern. How to draw FUNLS. Tangle Refresher 36. By Linda Farmer, CZT I’d like to extend a warm welcome all the Zentangle® newbies who’ve been joining us lately, it’s a great pleasure to have you aboard!

By Linda Farmer, CZT Not to be confused with one of the six tangle enhancers (aura, dewdrop, perfs, rounding, shading, and sparkle), this Sparkle is a tangle pattern shared by CZT® Sharon Caforio and it’s her first on the site.

How to draw SPARKLE

Sparkle “came about when the sparkle of a piece of jewelry caught my eye and I wanted to capture that in a tangle. I fell in love with the ease of doing it and have used it in several Zentangles since.” It’s nice to have a tangle that starts with a little different shape, and the curved lines of this one almost look woven when you’re done. Sparkle can be used as a border either end-to-end, or side-by-side, or in a section as I’ve done in my example simply by repeating the motif in some way. “I’m from the Chicago land area and like to do all sorts of crafts.

Sharon illustrates the steps for drawing Sparkle below and she also shares a lovely Zendala featuring her tangle. All images are copyright the artist and used with permission. Out with the pumpkin orange and harvest gold and in with all shades of red and green. It’s a bit of work but oh so much fun! Even having to pull the #@%&# cat out of the Christmas tree several times daily adds to the festivity. I would leave the cat alone but the dogs won’t quit barking while Bubba remains perched in there. As a kid our Christmas decorations in our home were centered on an elaborately decorated sixteen foot mantle. I always seem to incorporate my artwork into my Christmas decorations. The stars are simple to make and with a little scoring at the right spots turn into darling three-dimensional ornaments. Star-template2. String 021. By Linda Farmer, CZT Here’s another String from tangler Sue Zanker for your creative enjoyment.

String 021

Bear in mind that Zentangle® strings are guidelines. You can use them exactly as they are or adapt them to suit as your Zentangle grows. Start with the string as it’s shown then, as you go, combine sections if your tangles want to, or divide a section into smaller ones. Go with the flow and enjoy. Tangle Refresher 35. By Linda Farmer, CZT Stained Glass is from CZT® Suzanne McNeill’s Zentangle 6, “Terrific Stencils and Cards”, featuring projects using Dreamweaver stencils to create strings for the Zentangle-inspired crafts in the book.

Shortly after I had prepared my example of Suzanne’s Stained Glass tangle, I caught a glimpse of a variation of it on a television program. We had DVR’d an episode of TNT’s “Major Crimes” (“The Closer” spin-off series) and towards the end there is a scene in Captain Sharon Raydor’s dining room with one of the story’s characters, Rusty. I thought you might also like to have fun with this variation, so check out the overhead light fixture in this screen shot. By Linda Farmer, CZT Here we are entering the peak of the hurricane season, traditionally that’s Labor Day Weekend in this part of the world.

Since we’ve lived in Florida for nearly 30 years and most of that in South Florida, Robert and I have first-hand experience of many of them – including the Hurricane Andrew devastation 20 years ago this week. Not a fun adventure. The most important thing we learned a long time ago is to monitor the National Hurricane Center website and studiously ignore television’s sensationalist fear-mongers. The NOAA site (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is the only way to get the facts about where “tropical cyclone” systems are headed – and avoid the hysteria and hyperbole of television reporting.
