Laser-Cut Book Covers. By making a pattern of laser cuts in a flat piece of wood, you can easily create hinges, clamps, and other features.

Laser-Cut Book Covers

We made wooden booklets, each with a hinge and a notepad holder. The hinge can be fully bent in both directions repeatedly without breaking. How is that possible? First, wood has the strength to withstand repetitive bending and twisting. It won’t break as long as the stresses stay under a certain limit. Gear template generator program. The gear template generator program is a program for printing paper templates for cutting out gears.

Gear template generator program

It can do everything that the online gear template generator can do, and much more. Things that the offline gear template generator can do: Involute spur gears (spur, ring, and rack) Planetary gear sets (using ring gears) Calculate small gear tooth undercut shapes Lantern / cycloid gear pairs Block chain and roller chain sprocket calculations Print gears across multiple pages Show grids with diagonals to help align multi-page printouts Support for metric and inches dimensions Right angle gear mode see hereNo internet connection required Export DXF, HPGL, CSV, Sketchup, PDF and bitmaps For more details, see the Online help or watch the Demonstration VideoThe doumentation is also available in French but the program is English only System requirements: Windows XP, Vista, or 7 or 8.

Make: Projects – Periodic table elements collection cabinet. Every chemist (and arguably every scientist, and arguably everyone else in the world), whether amateur or professional, should have an elements collection.

Make: Projects – Periodic table elements collection cabinet

Theodore Gray has written eloquently about the hows and wherefores of collecting the chemical elements, so I won’t belabor the point here other than to say: chemistry has been called the central science, and arguably, chemistry’s greatest achievement has been the discovery of the chemical elements, the realization of the periodicity of their properties and its implications for atomic structure, and the isolation of each of those elements in its pure or “standard” state. Collecting the individual elements lets you participate in that incredible story in a way that no amount of book-learnin’ ever will.

When I first started collecting elements six years ago, as an undergraduate chemist, I stuffed them into vials in a shoebox on the top shelf of my closet. Science fair project: Tornado Box. Doug Smith and I put together this tornado chamber as part of a semi-permanent science museum exhibit in Boston in 1988.

Science fair project: Tornado Box

The main body was built from 1/4" thick plexiglas, a small 3in "boxer fan" on top of the case supplied the propulsion, and an ultrasonic humidifier supplied the white mist. 02 Laser-Cut Press-Fit Construction Kit. Contents Introduction.

LaserOrigami Uses a Laser Cutter to Create 3D Objects Faster than 3D Printers. It’s widely assumed that 3D printing represents the next frontier in fabricating objects of all types, but researchers at Germany’s Hasso Plattner Institute have come up with a novel way of creating 3D objects out of 2D pieces of plastic using a laser cutter.

LaserOrigami Uses a Laser Cutter to Create 3D Objects Faster than 3D Printers

LaserOrigami is a remarkable new fabrication technique that is faster than most 3D printers. Instead of using joints, LaserOrigami can create complex 3D objects by folding, bending and stretching plastic with extreme precision, eliminating the need for pieces to be manually assembled. To create a 3D object, LaserOrigami makes precise cuts in some places, and in others it uses defocused lasers to heat up certain parts of the plastic until they become pliable, bending under the force of gravity.

Using a defocused laser enables the machine to administer heat across a larger area, heating it up just enough that it bends into a new shape. The UD/Art Laser Cutter (see a brief description here) is a tool that can be used to cut, mark and/or engrave into various materials.

Preparing Files for the Laser Cutter

The laser cutter can accept vector (line art) and/or bitmap (1-bit raster images), but knowing which to use is a combination of artistic vision and technical knowledge. Knowing how to prepare your files for feeding into the laser cutter software will streamline your work, and this article will provide details for doing so.
