Lisa Charleyboy. Roseanne Supernault (Cree/Metis – East Prairie Metis Settlement) first got her start acting as a teenager when she went to an Edmonton open casting call for Peter Pan and came very close to winning the role of Tiger Lily.
She didn’t get the role, but she did land an agent and she also knew in that moment that there was nothing else for her to do but to pursue a career in acting. “The first time I acted, I fell in love,” she says. And the camera loves her back just as much. Supernault just finished filming the third season of the popular Aboriginal People’s Television Network drama, Blackstone. She plays Natalie Stoney, daughter of Gail, played by Gemini Award winning Actor Michelle Thrush. It’s the powerful women who work beside Supernault on Blackstone that truly inspire her. And that must be precisely why she started Next Gen, which lead acting workshops for Indigenous youth based out of Vancouver, BC.

A recent University of Massachusetts Amherst study found having academic contact with female professionals in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) can have positive influences on students—female students in particular.

The role models enhance their perceptions of such careers and boost their confidence in studying such subjects. I can certainly relate to this role model effect as an early career professional.
My dissertation advisor was female, as well as nearly half of the other members of the Biology Department. All of them are heavy-hitters in their own right, which made it easier for me to envision myself as a scientist and professor. Moreover, when it comes to attracting more minorities to study and pursue careers in STEM, the same formula works equally well. About the author: Dr. Photo courtesy of Alecia Hoyt. Iroqrafts.
