It can be traced back to early precursors such as Trajan's Column, in Rome, Egyptian hieroglyphs and the Bayeux Tapestry. Early narratives in art[edit] An example of an early precursor to print comics is Trajan's Column. Rome's Trajan's Column, dedicated in 110 AD, is an early surviving example of a narrative told through sequential pictures, while Egyptian hieroglyphs, Greek friezes, medieval tapestries such as the Bayeux Tapestry and illustrated manuscripts also combine sequential images and words to tell a story.

Versions of the Bible relying primarily on images rather than text were widely distributed in Europe in order to bring the teachings of Christianity to the illiterate. However, these works did not travel to the reader; it took the invention of modern printing techniques to bring the form to a wide audience and become a mass medium. Tout sur les comics. Par Alana Chantelune. The Modern Age of Comic Books / Useful Notes. If The Golden Age of Comic Books and The Silver Age of Comic Books were the childhood of Super Heroes, The Bronze Age of Comic Books was their adolescence, and The Dark Age of Comic Books was their angst-ridden teenage years, then The Modern Age of Comic Books is surely the college years: all the work gets turned in late, people come up to you with crazy-awesome ideas all the time (most of which don't really pan out), and there's still some adolescent attitude about, but it's growing into something more mature.

Because the medium has become multifaceted (or because Diamond has an effective monopoly on distribution, take your pick). Another suggested name is "The Post-Modern Age", due to the growing number of post modern books that have been coming out. The name "Neo-Silver Age" has also been used, considering the common values of the two. Grant Morrison recently referred to the current age as the "Renaissance", to contrast it with the Dark Age that had just come before. A History of the Comic Book. A History of the Comic Book

Originating in the United States in the late 1800s, the comic book contains everyday language, slang, and idiom, as well as color and a sophisticated interplay between text and image—all serving a therapeutic, explanatory, and commercial purpose in American culture. Traditionally occupying the fringes of pop culture, the comic book is actually a valuable historical text that comments on how young people and adults alike identify with cultural and political issues. As such, a comic book is much more than just a series of words and pictures with marginal cultural importance. The Timely Comics Web Page, Prologue

Why does anyone do anything? Because there are no good web resources for this sort of information, and I'm vain enough to think that I can provide...if not a definitive web resource for Timely Comics, then a darn good one; because I'm interested enough in the subject to make the effort to write this up; because something like this needs to be done; and because the Kirby Mafia is holding my dog hostage. The real genesis of this page came about when I was writing my essays on the Timely characters (which you can find here). However, finding out this information proved to be a bugger.
