Mastering Photoshop: Noise, Textures, Gradients and Rounded Rectangles

Photoshop contains a vast array of tools for embellishing a design, but choosing the right one isn’t always easy. Being the obsessive-compulsives that we are, we’ve conducted a huge range of experiments to determine the benefits and disadvantages of each technique. Here, then, is an obsessive-compulsive’s guide to some frequently used tools and techniques for Web and UI design in Photoshop. Noise and Textures Subtle noise or texture on UI elements can look great, but what’s the best way to add it? Number of layers used: fewer is better.Ability to scale: if the document is resized, will the effect maintain its quality? 1. Using a high amount of noise, setting the layer blending mode to Luminosity and reducing the opacity will yield the most control over the noise with the least disturbance to the underlying layers. 2. 3. 4.

These experiences help to forge relationships between the products we create and the people who use them. Whether you’re designing a website or a physical product, the formation of a relationship depends on how useful, usable and pleasurable the experience is. Ultimately, we form relationships with products and services for the same reasons we form relationships with people: Pleasurable products are attractive and make us feel good.

Attractive people can have the same effect.Usable products are easy to interact with and easy to understand. In a previous article on Boxes and Arrows (Design for Emotion and Flow), I talked about the importance of balancing users’ emotional states to command attention and create flow: the mental/emotional experience where all the user’s attention is totally focused on an activity. In Part 1 of this two-part article, I’ll be discussing how emotions command attention. 7 Free Beautiful Display Typefaces. The art of type design is for a special breed of designer.

7 Free Beautiful Display Typefaces

The insane attention to detail required to create typefaces is enough to drive the average person crazy, as every subtle curve and rule matters. If you’re a novice to the world of typography, you’ll most likely be familiar with text type, or fonts created to be legible and readable at small sizes. Adobe Caslon, for example, is a great text typeface for large amounts of text. Display typefaces, on the other hand, are less about legibility, (though that’s still important), and more about personality, character and distinctiveness.
