You know how Google last year redesigned its products to align their design, with more white space and more consistent navigation schemes? You might not have liked all that change. I know I found it jarring, to put it nicely — and I still bristle at some of the things I liked better the old way (gahhh, Google Reader). In fact, a major overhaul is something Google’s designers had wanted to do for a long time and had previously failed to persuade the company to do, they said on a panel at SXSW today. In 2007, designers from multiple Google products put together a set of unified redesign proposals code-named Kanna (Icelandic, meaning to explore, examine or investigate) that was never released. Facebook's privacy settings are extremely detailed, giving you the ability to fine-tune the privacy aspects of almost every little part of your Facebook account. Unfortunately, for most users, this level of micromanagement makes Facebook's privacy settings a convoluted mess. Even worse, these settings change often; you may think you know everything there is about them, only to be greeted with a completely different layout and a bunch of new options the next time you visit the dreaded Facebook Privacy Settings page. So, what do you do when you've got over 170 options to choose from? You focus on the most important ones. We've entered Facebook's maze of privacy options and came out on the other side bruised, battered, but with 10 essential settings in our hands.

Disregard them at your own peril! 1. Live and Learn, or Lose: Five Ways to Keep from Being Outdated. It doesn’t take an expert economist or a marketing guru to tell you that times are changing quickly. Social change, political shifts, and economic woes are ongoing. In January, Seth Godin wrote about a shift in the workplace, affirming that business itself is changing. Godin calls this post-recession epoch “the end of the average worker.”

Now is also the end of the average engineer, developer, or designer. So what’s the answer? Tip #1: Learn Something New Every Day Relying only on your current knowledge will not see you through to future success. A simple way to get around this is to force yourself to learn something new every day. Tip #2: Avoid Dead Ends at All Costs A few types of dead ends will keep you from staying relevant: Dead-end jobs These are the positions that are essential today, but won’t be around in five years.

Dead-end freelance work These are the jobs that don’t force you to stretch, that keep you anchored in the past. Dead-end education Tip #3: Begin a Horizontal Hobby.

They’re hosting a series of guest posts from Googlers who blog, and I was lucky enough to kick off the series! If you read Life After College regularly you’ve probably seen many of these templates already, but hopefully this will still serve as a nice re-cap. Important note: if any of the previews don’t show up, you can still use the template. Google Docs has been picking some technical fights with me lately, and we haven’t reconciled yet!
