Cool Computer Builds. Bats evolved to fix DNA from damage caused by flight. Bats are some of the most distinctive mammals around.
The only ones capable of powered flight, bat species occupy a variety of ecological niches, from predator to pollinator. The different habits come with some significant specializations, like echolocation and the ability to hibernate through cold weather. Part of the reason that bats have evolved such extensive specializations is that they've been around for a while—fossil evidence dates back over 50 million years. But now, thanks to our ability to sequence genomes, some researchers have provided a new picture of how bats manage to adapt to such distinctive lifestyles. The DNA sequences suggest that all bats share some adaptations that help them cope with the metabolic demands of flight, while individual species have other adaptations that help them handle echolocation and hibernation.
Compared to other mammals, the bat genome is a bit small at 2 billion base pairs (humans, in contrast, have a bit over 3 billion).

This past year was a busy one for Microsoft's Windows Azure team.
And next year seems to be shaping up as an equally fast-paced one for the groups building, maintaining and selling Microsoft's public cloud platform. In January 2012, I posted a roadmap with which Microsoft had provided some of its partners, listing many of the planned Azure features slated to roll out in the coming months. Looking back on that now, it seems like the Softies made good on pretty much all of the listed promises. Arguably, the biggest announcement of the year for Azure was the addition of persistent virtual machines, allowing users to run Linux and Windows Server on Microsoft's cloud.
(The persistent VM capability is still in "preview," with no word as to when it will be deemed "final. ") Bill Hilf, General Manager of Azure -- and former Linux point man at Microsoft -- said the Azure team began putting in place the people and the infrastructure to enable this year's Azure updates over a year and a half ago. Books. Black hat down: What happened to the world’s most famous hackers? - Slideshow. Hackers can be any shape, size, color, and creed, but they are all graced with a level of mental acuity that mere mortals simply do not possess.
Physically, they are rarely exceptional. Philosophically and morally, they can vary from ultra-conservative to bleeding-heart liberal. Even by nature and nurture, there is no obvious way to discern whether someone will become a hacker or not. But there is something that sets hackers apart from normal people. Hackers see things differently, and they tend to have a very different view of how the world and its constituent parts are put together. Hackers exist in almost every technological arena, too. The future of CPU scaling: Exploring options on the cutting edge. In our first article, we discussed the problems facing CPU scaling and how neither multi-core or heterogeneous many-core designs are a long-term solution.
This follow-up addresses what the semiconductor industry is doing about it. Pushing computers towards petahertz, with femtosecond lasers and weird dielectrics. New findings published by quantum scientists in Germany could pave the way towards computer chips that use light instead of electricity to control their internal logic. Where today’s silicon-based electrical computer chips are capable of speeds in the gigahertz range, the German light-based chips would be some 1,000,000 times faster, operating in the petahertz range. Rather than focusing on an exciting new semiconductor, or some metamaterial that manipulates light in weird and wonderful ways, this research instead revolves around dielectrics.
