Unfortunately, standby doesn’t always work like it should. Many sysadmins have struggled with applications, settings, and even system drivers that prevent standby from working reliably, or working at all. There were many scenarios in past versions of Windows where workstations configured to enter standby after a certain period of idle time would refuse to do so, often without many clues as to why. This behavior is commonly (and cleverly) referred to as PC insomnia.

While Windows 7 computers can still suffer from insomnia, the latest Windows OS now includes new tools and settings to troubleshoot and resolve it. If you haven’t already, you should check out my previous article about power management in Windows 7 in order to learn about power profiles and POWERCFG.EXE commands. After unchecking the box the symptoms did not change. I check the Latitude E4300 I have sitting here with to see if the same thing happens on it and much to my dismay this laptop does NOT suffer from the same symptoms. Both hav identical network cards, identical driver versions (10.0.6.0) and the box is also checked by default to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". yet the E4300 doesnt have the problem. So far multiple E6500's have the problem. I was able to make it stop on my E6500 by changing the "SipsEnabled" registry key value from 1 to 0 manually and then rebooting.

For quite some time, I’ve been having issues with wake-on-LAN and on Dell Optiplex 780 and Dell Optiplex 960 desktops at work. Basically, although Wake on LAN was enabled in the BIOS, and low power mode was disabled, I was still unable to wake the computer remotely. Up until now I’ve just ignored the issue and put it down to a hardware issue in a BIOS bug or similar, but finally I got fed up enough to motivate myself to investigate the issue. All of the desktops and laptops at work run Windows 7 Enterprise Edition (x86) which is deployed as a sysprepped image with Symantec Ghost. To start with, I installed the Intel PROSet for Windows Device Manager extensions which are part of the Intel driver installed (this doesn’t get installed when you do a INF based driver installation either manually, or in my case through Sysprep). Once installed, I the PROSet extensions, I had at the properties of the NIC, specifically the ‘Power Management’ tab.
