CSS Sprites: What They Are, Why They’re Cool, and How To Use Them | CSS-Tricks

This post was originally co-authored in late 2007 by me and Volkan Görgülü, I'm updating it now to improve it a bit and make it more current. You've heard of them, but... Do you really understand them? The name might be a little misleading, because sprites aren't little images like you might be picturing, a sprite is actually one big image . Have you ever seen the CSS technique where the "on" and "off" states of a button are contained within the same image and are activated by shifting the background-position? Here is an example of that on CSS-Tricks.
I have collected another collection of CSS drop down menus to add to your library. This collection consists of amazing wonderful CSS drop-down menus themese with different styles.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, another introductory CSS tutorial has been posted at Digital Web Magazine . Good night-time reading for you insomniacs… Posted by Mark at 10:45 AM I remember being in grade school and having to do a report on a country. It was beat into us that we should not copy the books that we used word for word. That would be cheating.

CSS glish.com : layout techniques

Look Ma, No Tables. If you are looking for help making the transition to CSS layout (that's Cascading Style Sheets), you've come to the right place. I am cataloging here as many useful cross-browser CSS layout techniques as I can find, and some that I made up when I was bored last Thursday. All the examples on this site have been reduced to only their essential code, and you will find the source displayed on each page to hopefully make it quick and easy to understand the inner workings of the CSS. Feel free to steal all the code you find on this site , and consider linking back here on your site or in your source comments. You will also find below links to various online CSS resources and tutorials , appropriate for both the novice and the seasoned CSS veteran.
This is not a complete resource, this is a fast resource. These are the sites that I refer to first, and that I tell people to read. When you want more, just about all of them have their own links to good sites.

Fico by Lensco.be | an icon font for responsive web designs, Retina display FICO , by Lensco.be, is a font with 52 simple, commonly used icons and glyphs, served on the web via @font-face. Small (under 12K when gripped, in one HTTP request) and color-agnostic (you can even use gradients and shadows), it is perfect for responsive designs with media queries, and for creating a rich visual feel without the bandwidth and production overhead of JPG images in a Retina world. TUESDAY, 3 APRIL 2012, was Day II of An Event Apart Seattle , a sold-out, three-day event for people who make websites. If you couldn’t be among us, never fear. The amazing Luke Wroblewski (who leads a day-long seminar on mobile web design today) took excellent notes throughout the day, and shares them herewith:

css-discuss.org

css-discuss is a mailing list devoted to talking about CSS and ways to use it in the real world; in other words, practical uses and applications. While theory and ideas for the future are interesting, they do interfere with our mission to help people get the most out of CSS today, so we tend not to spend a lot of time on theory. There are other lists and groups for that sort of thing anyway. The list sports a very large membership and strong sense of community. This particular community is welcoming of new members, but remember that any large group of people who have been around for a while will have evolved a set of mores and limits.
