The breed was developed from local breeds mated to Anglo-Nubian and Swiss breeds during a period from 1920 to 1950.Golden Guernseys are kept for their milk and are recognized as a dairy breed by the British Goat Society. The production levels are lower than what is commonly found in the Swiss breeds but the milk is higher in butter fat and proteins which make it an excellent choice for cheese making.The breed is used primarily for milk production.
