Most people are passionate about one sport or another and that passion can act as a medium of integration. In sport our goal is to win but we do not always win. Even though we cannot change our tribes, we can change the way see and interact with people from other tribes, social and religious groups and sports provide a formula for this – tolerance and the graciousness of accepting to win or lose.

Sports is universal, the language is universal and it does not differentiate actors along social, tribal or religious backgrounds. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will organize a half marathon (21km) on Sunday, 24 February 2013 following the first universal session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Forum (GC/GMEF).

The marathon will bring together most of Kenya’s renowned and upcoming athletes, UN staff members, the diplomatic community and the general public. A 7.5km run will be organized alongside the half marathon. The event will be used to promote environmental conservation and celebrate UNEP’s first session of GC/GMEF with universal membership. Online registration for the marathon will open on Thursday, 31 January 2013 on the GC/GMEF website ( UNEP would like to invite the members of the diplomatic community and delegates to the GC/GMEF to register for this event.
