Earth Charter - The New World Religion. The Holy See - Vatican web site. The Dignity of Older People and their Mission in the Church and in the World Scientific advances and the consequent progress of medicine have made a decisive contribution in recent decades to prolonging the average duration of human life. The term “third age” now embraces a large segment of the world's population: people who have retired from active employment, yet who still have great inner resources and are still able to contribute to the common good.

To this huge throng of “young old” (as they are called by the new categories of old age defined by demographers, i.e. those aged between 65 and 70) is added a so-called fourth age, that of the “oldest old” (those over 75), whose ranks are likewise destined to become ever more numerous. (1) This kind of “silent revolution” goes far beyond the demographic data: it poses social, economic, cultural, psychological and spiritual problems of a magnitude which has for some time been a matter of concern to the international Community. World Population: Past, Present, and Future (move and expand the bar at the bottom of the chart to navigate through time) The chart above illustrates how world population has changed throughout history. View the full tabulated data. At the dawn of agriculture, about 8000 B.C., the population of the world was approximately 5 million. Over the 8,000-year period up to 1 A.D. it grew to 200 million (some estimate 300 million or even 600, suggesting how imprecise population estimates of early historical periods can be), with a growth rate of under 0.05% per year.

A tremendous change occurred with the industrial revolution: whereas it had taken all of human history until around 1800 for world population to reach one billion, the second billion was achieved in only 130 years (1930), the third billion in 30 years (1960), the fourth billion in 15 years (1974), and the fifth billion in only 13 years (1987). You are experiencing a normal crisis brought on by the inevitable and pressing awareness that you won’t live forever. The Third Age Foundation's seven steps are intended to help mature adults successfully confront the unfinished business.

The Foundation also puts on workshops and presentations, and does individual sessions with people in need. The Third Age Network. Morgan © 2012 Upper Room Books, Nashville, TN If you are looking for spiritual guidance during the last third of your life or that of a loved one, you will find it in this book.

The authors use the word pilgrimage. The book describes seven pathways to follow. The book should not be read quickly, cover-to-cover, but savored, allowing its wisdom to slowly seep in and inform our lives. The first gateway is to honestly face the aging process and the prospect of death. From the era of Greek philosophers there has been the desire to return to the One—to our point of origin. The second gateway is to acknowledge our limitations and use them to our advantage.

In the third gateway we are invited to do the inner work. The authors next invite us to reflect on the role of the community. Then comes the section on prayer and contemplation. About Third Age Third Age is a national voluntary organisation celebrating the third age in life when people may no longer be in paid employment, but can remain healthy, fulfilled and continue to contribute to society. The longer that people are encouraged to remain in this life stage, the better for older people themselves, their families, communities and society as a whole. Third Age, through a variety of local and national programmes, demonstrates the value of older people remaining engaged and contributing in their own community for as long as possible.

Third Age recognises and celebrates the fact that older people are a diverse group with different needs, abilities, backgrounds and experiences. Third Age responds dynamically continually developing new responses as new needs emerge. Programmes and services are designed so that members have a real say in their development, thus instilling a sense of ownership, responsibility and mutual support. Ageing & Society. Scientific advances and the consequent progress of medicine have made a decisive contribution in recent decades to prolonging the average duration of human life. The prolongation of average life expectancy, and the sometimes dramatic decrease in the birth rate, have given rise to an unprecedented demographic transition: the age pyramid that existed less than half a century ago has literally been turned upside down. This kind of “silent revolution” goes far beyond the demographic data: it poses social, economic, cultural, psychological and spiritual problems of a magnitude which has for some time been a matter of concern to the international Community. The Church's attention and commitment to older people are nothing new.

However, it has to be recognised that the current situation is unprecedented in many respects. 10 questions that make sure the elderly are treated with dignity and respect. By Beezy Marsh Updated: 23:32 GMT, 15 March 2009 Some vulnerable pensioners will be given a checklist to make sure their needs for respect and dignity are met Vulnerable elderly people and their relatives are being given new guidance to protect their dignity in hospitals and care homes.

A checklist for patients and carers includes ten questions to ensure basic needs are met and people are treated with respect. The guidelines are to be issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Council after it emerged that less than half the population think elderly people are being treated properly. But only 55 per cent said they would complain to a nursing manager if they or their relatives felt they were getting poor treatment. The research, commissioned by the NMC, found that most people who would not report poor care said they did not want to make a fuss or did not expect compassion from a nurse. The NMC, which regulates 660,000 health workers in the UK, is also issuing new guidance to nurses. U.S. Birth Rate Not High Enough To Keep Population Stable. The Fertility Implosion. Usually, high religious observance and low income go along with high birthrates.

But, according to the United States Census Bureau, Iran now has a similar birth rate to New England — which is the least fertile region in the U.S. The speed of the change is breathtaking. A woman in Oman today has 5.6 fewer babies than a woman in Oman 30 years ago. Morocco, Syria and Saudi Arabia have seen fertility-rate declines of nearly 60 percent, and in Iran it’s more than 70 percent. The Iranian regime is aware of how the rapidly aging population and the lack of young people entering the work force could lead to long-term decline. As Eberstadt is careful to note, demographics is not necessarily destiny. If you look around the world, you see many other nations facing demographic headwinds.

Already, nearly half the world’s population lives in countries with birthrates below the replacement level. Some countries have it worse than others. But India faces a regional challenge.
