Mountain Bothies Association : FAQ : Scotland, England, Wales

What is a bothy? A bothy was originally farm accommodation for itinerant workers; now a bothy is an open shelter usually in a remote location where travellers might have need of four walls and a roof. Most bothies are old cottages and at least several hours walk from the public road. Back to Top Bookings! You can't. Charges? No charges are made for using any bothy in our care. Facilities! You should only expect to find a wind and waterproof building with somewhere dry to sleep. Map me! Almost all bothies are marked on the Ordnance Survey Landranger series of 1:50,000 maps, but there is no special map of bothy locations. MBA? We maintain about 100 bothies to keep them wind and watertight. Membership? No, MBA maintained bothies are open to anyone who needs the shelter. Restrictions! Now and again the owner of a particular bothy may impose restrictions on the use of their property, such as during the deer stalking season in Scotland or during lambing. 11 cheap gifts guaranteed to impress science geeks.

Here are some of the more affordable gifts that are guaranteed to tickle the fancy of the science geek. The EcoSphere and “Original Ecosphere” are trademark names for sealed blown-glass miniature aquaria produced by Ecosphere Associates, Inc., of Tucson, Arizona, United States. Spherical or ovoid, the aquaria range from roughly baseball-size to soccer-ball-size. They are sold worldwide as scientific novelties and decorative objects. The EcoSphere’s main visual appeal is provided by tiny red-pink shrimp, Halocaridina rubra, between 1/4 and 3/8 inch (or approximately a centimeter) in length. The main conceptual interest of these objects lies in the fact that they are materially closed ecological systems which are self-sustaining over a period of years. A magnetic scrubber is enclosed in each EcoSphere. The term does not refer to meteorites found on Mars, such as Heat Shield Rock. Hli8h.jpg (JPEG Image, 1208x870 pixels)

Hello I am doing a total renovation on my kitchen in Brooklyn and have always wanted one of those over-the-sink drying cabinets so common in Europe.

Dish-drying cabinet over the sink / Escurreplatos / Scolapiatti - IKEA FANS

I saw there was an inconclusive thread about this a while ago, but couldn't see how to reply to it, so I started this one. Basically what I am after is a wall-mounted cabinet over the sink, open at the bottom, which instead of shelving has two racks, typically a lower one for just-washed plates and a flat one above for glasses. The water then either drips off the dishes into a shallow tray just below the bottom rack, or directly into the sink. Your dishes then dry by themselves while they remain out of sight, and - even more important for me - off that precious counterspace. Most people I've spoken to here in the States who have never seen them seem to react with a mixture of shock and disgust, picturing torrents of water coming down off the plates and going everywhere, and causing mildew problems, etc. But trust me, it works, and I want one!
