Northwest Coast Kwakwaka’wakw art is renowned for its flamboyant, energetic, and colorful carving and painting. Among the leading practitioners was Doug Cranmer (1927-2006), whose style was understated, elegant, and fresh, and whose work quickly found an international following in the 1960s.
He was an early player in the global commercial art market, and one of the first Native artists in British Columbia to own his own gallery. If one had to choose a single indigenous artist to represent the state of Aboriginal art, it would be hard to go past Paddy Bedford, or Goowoomji as he is known among his own people.
Born in 1922 or thereabouts, Bedford did not begin painting until 1998. His rise has been as meteoric as any contemporary Aboriginal painter, with the possible exception of Tommy Watson, who is slightly younger but began painting only in 2001. It is a commonplace that many of the best Aboriginal painters have been late starters, with a lifetime's experience behind them by the time they pick up the brush. In the case of figures such as Bedford or Rover Thomas, that life has been spent in one of the harshest, most impoverished environments in Australia. The north-west corner of the country is a place where the worst forms of racist brutality and discrimination were taken for granted. Bedford was accustomed to the poverty and degradation of life before he attained a miraculous late celebrity as an artist.
