CloudOn brings Microsoft Office to your iPhone. Will Kelly takes a look at CloudOn, the cloud-based Office suite for the iPad and Android that is now available for the iPhone. When I wrote "Tune your mobile office apps for BYOD," I saw that mobile office suites are gaining in features. However, CloudOn sat in a different class, because it runs a full version of the Microsoft Office suite, not a cut-down mobile version of the desktop word processor, spreadsheet, or presentation software.

Now, CloudOn is available for the iPhone. If you're like me and keep certain project files in a cloud account, having CloudOn on your iPhone can help during those times when you need quick access to a document. Please note that you have to be online to use CloudOn. This free application includes the following features: Cloud storage support CloudOn lets you rename, delete, and manage documents in the following cloud accounts: Dropbox Box Google Drive SkyDrive Document support Create and edit documents New Microsoft Word File dialog box.

Details Category: Gadgets 21 Oct 2012 Written by Stephen Fenech One of the main complaints with Apple’s iPad is that it doesn’t have a USB port to easily view files but a new product called the iFlashdrive solves that problem. The device allows users to save files like a regular USB drive and then view the files on the iPad, iPhone or iPod simply by plugging it in to the 30-pin dock connector. The first time the iFlashdrive is plugged into your iOS device it automatically launches a notification to download the free iFlashdrive app. At one end of the iFlashdrive is a 30-pin dock connector and at the other end is a traditional USB connection. And in between is a small flash memory module with a capacity of 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB.

Where can I buy the iFlashDrive online? If you're interested in purchasing the iFlashDrive, visit BuyMac.com.au to order it online today. The iFlashdrive fits into the iOS device's 30-pin dock connector to read files from the drives memory And it doesn't stop there. The best office apps for your iPad, round 5. Who needs MS Office for iOS and Android? CloudOn's here now | Microsoft. Those of you waiting for Microsoft to unveil a version of Office for iOS or Android should stop waiting and take CloudOn's Office app for a spin. Reports of Microsoft bringing Office to the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices have been in the wind for the past year. Initial rumors pointed to a launch date of last November . The timeframe then slipped to last month . And now an alleged Microsoft road map suggests that a mobile version of Office won't appear until later next year .

The head of the Microsoft Office division recently suggested that iOS and Android users try Microsoft's SkyDrive app . Instead, I rely on CloudOn's free Office app to create and edit documents on all of my mobile devices. CloudOn's app supports Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Thanks to an update to the app from last December , you can open and edit any Office document stored on SkyDrive. The interface itself offers the familiar Ribbon interface first introduced with Office 2007. Pages word processor documents using SkyDrive on iPad. Found this helpful 0 Allan_I replied on Microsoft Forum Moderator Hi pdkin, Based on my investigations, this issue is already out of our support boundaries. I have determined that you should contact Pages word processor (Apple) for support. Thank you.

What I've Learned from Teaching with iPads - ProfHacker. [This is a guest post by Doug Ward, an associate professor of journalism and the Budig Professor of Writing at the University of Kansas. He's written about iPads before on ProfHacker, and on using music in class. --@jbj] I had high hopes when I handed out iPads to students in my graduate seminar this semester. I wanted to explore the possibilities of tablet computing and see firsthand how tablets might be used in higher education. I also wanted students to see for themselves where the iPad might fit into their lives and their careers – and into the future of media and communication. For the most part, students ended the semester with a collective shrug. That’s surprised me, though I still consider the semester a success. First, some background I had read about Cathy Davidson’s experiences with the iPod Touch at Duke and decided to distribute the iPads with few stipulations.

GoodReader for iPad: An inexpensive, powerful app for the enterprise. Paul Strobeck takes an introductory look at GoodReader for iPad, an inexpensive app that's become a primary tool in his enterprise. Every day, there are hundreds of new applications added to the various app stores. As enterprise tablet users, where do we start? Historically, our Windows PCs have come to rely on the Microsoft Office Suite as one of our primary tools for creating and viewing knowledge work.

Tablets are great for consuming content, and it's recently coming into its own as a creative tool, but what will become our primary apps for tablet computing? One of the challenges we've worked to overcome is determining which apps we should purchase and roll out across the iPads in our enterprise environment. You can also use GoodReader to connect to other cloud storage providers -- Box, Dropbox, Google Apps, SugarSync -- and other types of connections, including FTP/SFTP and AFP servers.

The GoodReader app is available for both the iPad and IPhone for $4.99 (USD). Figure H. Oh Apple Configurator, I will not be defeated!! NOTE: In case you are unaware, Configurator is a Mac Only application. If you run your management of iPads with a PC, ignore this. ( or buy one Mac for your school. That’s what I did – we are PC only despite my Apple bias on this blog.) As I’ve said many times this year on this blog, I’m more of a pedagogical user of software rather than a technician but being the resident Apple man, I was given responsibility for the iPad program at our school.

I set up the trial iPads this year using iTunes under one shared account while we went about trialling the wonder tablet in our classrooms. I was disappointed in the lack of clarity in the Configurator manual and online help from Apple and I did a lot of fruitless searching for answers to my initial questions about Configurator. Initially, I was very happy with the basic idea behind Configurator and found it very simple to use until a major flaw, that unfortunately I’ve have decided to accept (more on that later) showed its ridiculous self.

AST-0061373_iPad_Technical_Guide_US_WP. 7 Ways to Get Files Onto Your iPad | ionGrid. Apple's iPad has quickly become the easiest, fastest and most portable device for accessing documents on the go. There are plenty of third-party applications that allow you to view, annotate and edit Microsoft Office documents (and it is rumored that soon there will be native Office apps for iPad). Interestingly — and counterintuitively — while you can interact with many types of non-multimedia documents once they're on your iPad, there's no easy way to get them there in the first place. For better or worse, iPad doesn't have a USB port nor does it have an easily accessible file system that would allow you to easily use it as a storage device. The portal to get content onto iPad, generally speaking, is via iTunes — which doesn't support documents (at least not yet.)

So, in order to access the documents that you need (to give your PowerPoint presentation or view a PDF or edit an Excel or Word document, etc.) you typically have to do one of the following things: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 4 ways to use Microsoft Office on iPad and Android right now. It’s finally here – Microsoft has released Office for the iPad, and Apple business users everywhere are rejoicing. Yesterday, Microsoft announced it was launching Word, PowerPoint and Excel on Office, with the free versions allowing users to read documents and run presentations on PowerPoint. However, with an Office 365 subscription, users will be able to edit documents directly from the iPad. “Every day we hear from you how important it is to have a great productivity experience on all the devices you use,” wrote John Case, vice-president of original equipment manufacturer marketing, in a blog post. ”But this isn’t simply Office on another device.

We thought a lot about what people want to do when they’re on their tablet, iPad functionality, and touch-first when we were building Office for iPad. We reimagined Office on the iPad, while retaining what people love about Office.” SkyDrive The first place to go when you want to edit Microsoft Office documents on any platform is… Microsoft. The enterprise headache with Windows Live ID and SkyDrive. I’m confident that everyone reading this has received spam from a friend’s Hotmail account and then got the apologetic “sorry my account was hacked” email.

Or worst, had it happen to them. If you thought compromising Windows Live ID’s was attractive before, now that it will get you to a person’s SkyDrive, browsing history, Wi-Fi and browser stored passwords, etc, it just got a whole lot more attractive to hackers to phish for. I predict a substantial increase in Windows Live ID phishing. Now Microsoft has made some efforts to increase security around your Live ID. Someone logging in from an un-trusted machine (as defined by you) does have some extra hoops to jump. What gets synchronized and how it is protected is described in the following blog post by the Windows 8 engineering team. What business needs to do Make decisions on security. Microsoft Office coming to iPad despite alternatives. Many apps already allow users to create and edit Office file formats – some of them for free. When Microsoft Corp. brings Office to Apple’s mobile devices, will you switch to it from the productivity suite you’re already using?

Blogger Eric Eckel is looking forward to Microsoft Office being released on iOS, saying the productivity suite has become the defecto standard from large enterprises to residential users and across the spectrum. He says that in a cloud-centric world where users are juggling multiple devices and working on the same files using all of them, compatibility is the glue that makes it all work. But a simple search for “Microsoft Office” in the app store today renders several worthy mobile productivity suites that are already compatible with Microsoft Word and work hand-in-hand with several different cloud storage vendors like Dropbox or Google Drive, and not just SkyDrive. With free apps like Cloudon, is a Microsoft Office app needed? (Image: Cloudon) Quickoffice Pro. Do It Yourself WebDav for #iPad Document Sharing. In my previous entry, I shared the Otixo approach (thanks, Mark!)

To getting documents off your iPad. But that got me thinking about what would it take to set up your own WebDav server in your District so you're not posting confidential documents off in the cloud (e.g. Dropbox, Box.net) and, in the case of Otixo (which makes it very easy to do this), having to upgrade to their paid service because they're so awesome. So, wouldn't it be neat to setup WebDav for your own use in a school district? That would make it much easier to move documents on/off your iPad. How could school districts set up their own Do It Yourself WebDav for sharing documents among students/staff with iPads, and not have to rely on the cloud-based services at all, eliminating the concern of storing confidential student data in the cloud? If you don't want to mess with those instructions linked above, you could always give OwnCloud a try.

OwnCloud is perfect for use inside your company. Get Blog Updates via Email! 6 Apps to Turn Your iPad Into a Productive Business Tool. How to Use Airplay Without Apple TV : Apple Product FAQs. AirPlay without Apple (other than Apple TV) » EdTech at OWU. I got a chance today to try out a couple of devices with the new Apple TV set up in our conference room. Since my MacBook Pro is too old to support screen mirroring, I wanted to see what options are available for my Android phone and my Windows laptop… The ZappoTV app for Android worked as promised. It allowed me to send a number of items–media from my droid gallery, YouTube, Flickr, ShoutCast (although I couldn’t find OWU Radio,) and more to the Apple TV. It was noticeably laggy at times and often gave an annoying message on my phone screen that it was waiting for the device, which prevented me from selecting anything until it cleared. It was not screen mirroring and it did not allow broadcasting of documents or other apps. The app and the use of it is free with a (also free) ZappoTV account, so I can’t really complain. For Windows and older Macs, AirParrot offers a free trial for 20 minutes.

Not sure what to do with your old iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch? Instead of throwing it out or selling it for a fraction of its original value, what if you could get some more use out of the device by turning it into an AirPlay streaming box? AirFloat is an open source tweak that’s been in development for a while, but hasn’t been released on Cydia until now. (It was actually removed from the iTunes store last year.)

With AirFloat, you don’t need to buy an Apple TV or an AirPort Express to stream music through your house. To enable AirFloat, all you need to do is install it from Cydia and launch the AirFloat server app from the springboard. I’m very impressed with how well the tweak works when streaming music from my iPhone 4 to my 3rd generation iPad (and vice versa).

Airfloat backgrounds like any other music player AirFloat is an incredible jailbreak app and is only improved by the fact it’s available for free in the BigBoss repository on Cydia.
