89-Year-Old Former Kansas Player Scores in Alumni Scrimmage. An 89-year-old former University of Kansas football player has gained fresh fame after making a touchdown run during an alumni scrimmage. Bryan Sperry was all grins Saturday as he jogged toward the Memorial Stadium end zone during the scrimmage before Kansas' annual spring football game, The Kansas City Star ( ) reported. His decades-younger opponents intentionally missed repeated tackles before showering him with congratulatory hugs and pats on the back. "That was fun," the Pittsburg resident said.

"I didn't know if I could run. " Sperry was 17 years old when he first left home to play football at Kansas State, but World War II interrupted his schooling. The process of returning soldiers home by boat after the war took months, so the military sent Sperry to a university in England to wait. While there, he says, he played 13 games on a team that was a mix of professionals, college players and high school graduates with limited football experience.

Manage perceptions in the workplace | The Business Times. Article date: Oct 13 2010 It’s been said that perception is reality. In the workplace, perceptions that aren’t managed become rumors, then gossip and then backbiting, which leads to destruction. Unmanaged perceptions become a reality that wasn’t intended.

Since most people are uncomfortable providing direct feedback, we often don’t know how we’re perceived. That makes our reputation — how others perceive us — an asset or detriment. We can manage perceptions, though, by asking questions and receiving feedback. Most leaders typically don’t receive feedback very often. Seek out people who have opportunities to observe your behavior, an interest in your effectiveness and can speak to you directly and honestly.

It’s possible to actively manage the perceptions others have of you. “Two guys take out their dates. But this demonstrates the fundamental flaw in communications: People hear and see whatever is important to them. You must know yourself and consider your audience. Darla Fortner. How Companies Learn Your Secrets. Welcome to Forbes. Starbucks organizational design. Starbucks Baristas Told to Slow Down. Starbucks Corp. SBUX -0.52 % is telling its harried baristas to slow down—which may result in longer lines. Amid customer complaints that the Seattle-based coffee chain has reduced the fine art of coffee making to a mechanized process with all the romance of an assembly line, Starbucks baristas are being told to stop making multiple drinks at the same time and focus instead on no more than two drinks at a time—starting a second one while finishing the first, according to company documents reviewed recently by The Wall Street Journal.

Baristas are also supposed to steam milk for each drink rather than steaming an entire pitcher to be used for several beverages. Other instructions include rinsing pitchers after each use; staying at the espresso bar instead of moving around; and using only one espresso machine instead of two, according to the documents.

Starbucks insists the new procedures will eventually hasten the way drinks are made and lead to fresher, hotter drinks. Tom Wujec: Build a tower, build a team. Teamwork in soccer : gifs. Understanding the Importance of Teamwork. Karlene Sugarman explains how you can assess and develop a cohesive team The concept of teamwork is extremely important to the success of any team. All coaches talk about working as one unit, as a unified team. Teamwork and unselfishness create the backbone of a great team, without them a team cannot realistically compete.

You can have a group of superstars, but if they do not work well as one unit, chances are they are not going to be as successful as you would think. The team working as one cohesive unit is going to be the key in their success. What to look for Here are some things to take into consideration when you are looking at your team: Does your team have agreed-upon goals they created as a team? A productive team has players that share common goals, a common vision and have some level of interdependence that requires both verbal and physical interaction. Teamwork To succeed at the task in hand everyone involved needs to combine their efforts. About the Author Article Reference. Using Sports to Teach Teamwork. September 26, 2013 By: Chantel L. Lumpkin, PhD in Effective Teaching Strategies Teamwork is an important skill for students in every major. But despite its importance, most students do not know how to work together as a team. My frustration with group work, including the multiple complaints about students who either autocratically assumed control or neglected to pull their weight, led me to look for examples of teamwork in action that I might use as models.

Baseball, or everyone gets a turn at bat, allows for varying strengths and levels of participation. Basketball has two approaches, star players and man-to-man zone. In football, or pass, run, kick, the quarterback is the leader responsible for calling plays, passing, or handing off the ball to other team members. In track (relay), or pass the baton, each team member has equal responsibilities, materials, and time. Students tell me they appreciate these teamwork models and are able to apply them when working in groups. Dr. Snapchat's 'atmosphere of kindness' key amid rapid growth, CEO says. Snapchat Chief Executive Evan Spiegel demurred on questions about Alibaba’s investment in his start-up at his latest public appearance, but he did talk about the “atmosphere of kindness” at Snapchat. “That is at the top of our list of things we care about,” he told venture capitalist Jamie Montgomery during an on-stage conversation at the Montgomery Summit technology conference in Santa Monica late Wednesday afternoon.

Snapchat, he said, has aimed for workers to feel comfortable even when barraged by feedback that’s potentially hurtful. “It’s not enough to not be mean,” he said. “You've got to really, really try to be kind .... If you don’t have that environment of kindness, there’s just no way you can expect people to grow at the rate they need to cope with a business that’s changing quickly.” Beside kindness, Spiegel pointed to hard work and creativity as “baseline” traits needed to work at Los Angeles’ most valuable technology start-up. A hierarchical business structure is a traditional approach to organizing a business where emphasis is placed on top-down reporting relationships. A typical organizational chart outlines reporting relationships between employees and their supervisors, as well as functional interaction between employees that operate on the same level within the business.

Reporting Clarity A common frustration for some employees is not knowing who they primarily report to. With an effective hierarchical structure, reporting relationships are clearly defined and each employee only has one direct report responsibility. This streamlines communication flow as employees provide feedback and suggestions directly to their manager, who decides what action to take or whether to continue its path upward. In the same way, employees turn to supervisors who disseminate information within their work group or functional area. Netflix just won another indirect victory in the form of a net neutrality proposal passed by the Federal Communications Commission, which would ban all types of paid prioritisation on the internet. This means Verizon, AT&T and Comcast will be unable to seek more revenue from Netflix, in exchange for fast video streaming rates to Netflix’s 40 million US subscribers. Netflix did not win through the £6.99 per month service that offered hundreds of movies and dozens of TV shows, but from its own collection of original programming. It all started with the launch of “House of Cards” on 1 February 2013, an ambitious recreation of the UK TV show by the same name. That was only the start. Ring Could Log Users In to Houses, Phones and Website as Soon as Next Month. The need for more passwords that our feeble human brains struggle to remember can make it feel like we work for the machines instead of the other way around. Wearable, and even embeddable, login storage has emerged has a possible solution. After Google researchers floated the idea of a USB stick or a ring that would generate login keys, it appeared the Web giant would lead the way. But a UK project recently closed a $380,000 Kickstarter campaign, promising delivery of 61,000 password-bearing rings in September.

The company, NFC Ring, makes a simple silver ring with two near-field communication transmitters inside it, storing access information that can potentially be used to unlock phones, cars or houses or even to log in to websites. One transmitter faces out and stores information that the user may want to share, such as his or her contact information. (The Android operating system allows users to share data via NFC.) Samsung, battling to hold on to its lead in the smartphone market, needs to win back consumers from Apple with its next big thing. But will the new Galaxy S6 be big enough? Samsung, set to debut new models of its top-of-the-line smartphone, needs to offer a design that convinces people to do something they didn't do the last time the Galaxy was updated: buy them. After leading the smartphone market for the past four years, Samsung has seen its profit slide as customers have defected to rival Xiaomi in China, Micromax in India and Apple nearly everywhere else.

In the global smartphone market, Samsung tied with Apple as the No. 1 vendor in the fourth quarter of 2014 -- a competitor it had crushed not too long ago. With the new Galaxy S6, set to debut on Sunday at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung is expected to deliver two versions of the smartphone that incorporate sleeker materials, like metal, versus its previous plastic designs. This Chilling PSA Will Be The First To Ever Address Domestic Violence During The Super Bowl. This Sunday, for the first time ever, the National Football League will run a PSA during the Super Bowl that directly addresses the country’s domestic violence and sexual assault crises.

The PSA was created by the advertising firm Grey New York for the NFL and No More, a five-year-old coalition of groups dedicated to fighting domestic violence and sexual assault. No More teamed up with the NFL to create football-focused PSAs after a number of the league's players became embroiled in child or domestic abuse-related scandals. A 30-second version of the PSA will air during the first quarter of the game on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015.

But an extended version, which you can view above, has already been released. In the PSA, a woman calls 911 but pretends to order a pizza so that her abuser is not aware of what she is doing. “I’d like to order a pizza for delivery.” The PSA, which is reportedly based on a real-life story, ends with the words: "When it's hard to talk, it's up to us to listen. By Jason Lange WASHINGTON, Jan 20 (Reuters) - When President Barack Obama called attention on Tuesday to rising U.S. wages, he noted employers had not planned so many raises in years. But what he left out is that government data suggests actual wage increase are stuck in low gear.

"Today, thanks to a growing economy, the recovery is touching more and more lives," Obama said in his annual State of the Union address. The president was not entirely triumphant in his speech, calling on Washington to help lift more Americans out of poverty by raising the minimum wage. But in making a case that America had broken out of the economic doldrums, he said: "Wages are finally starting to rise again. " While it is true that earnings are rising, the problem with that statement is that multiple government surveys suggest income growth remains much slower than before the 2007-09 recession.

On the eve of the recession, which began in December 2007, earnings were growing more than 3 percent every 12 months. Bill Belichick has always seen Tom Brady as a leader. RICHMOND — On Monday, Bill Belichick recounted his days with the Baltimore Colts, who essentially became Redskins North in 1975 after Baltimore hired Washington offensive coordinator Ted Marchibroda as head coach and he brought his whole staff and playbook with him. Part of Belichick’s job that season, his first in the NFL, was using Wite-Out to cover up “Washington Redskins” on pages of the playbook, type in “Baltimore Colts,” and then make copies of the “new” pages. Continue reading below On Tuesday, he was asked about his relationship with Tom Brady and how it has developed over the years. That led to Belichick strolling down Memory Lane once again. “Tom and I came in together the same year — his rookie year was my first year with the Patriots,” Belichick said.

“We had a lot of young players; we had 20-some rookies on that team. “He’s always had a real, I would say, strong leadership role on the team. That continuity has been beneficial for Brady. “The expectations I know. CSUCI MGT307-05 Class Collection.
