Don't Talk About Mentoring. I was recently in a meeting with a president, chief diversity officer and dean at a small liberal arts college.

Don't Talk About Mentoring

The president launched our conversation by confidently insisting that while lots of people talk about the importance of mentoring, nothing really works, nobody has figured it out, none of the existing program models have rigorous enough measures, and all any program really does is make people feel better. As someone who has run variety of successful mentoring programs, this is typically the moment when I glaze over and disengage because the implicit message is: go ahead and try to prove to me what you’re doing works but I probably won’t believe you anyway.

Contrast this with the fact that the very same day I met with a great many faculty members on that campus who were desperate for mentoring. Mentor Tool Kit.pdf - mentoring_415.pdf. Supporting Beginning Teachers:The Challenges of Supporting New Teachers. A Conversation with Linda Darling-Hammond But now most states have implemented some sort of professional development or peer assistance for new teachers.

Supporting Beginning Teachers:The Challenges of Supporting New Teachers

About three-fourths of new teachers report that they have participated in an induction program and have had a mentor teacher assigned to them.1 A few states even have fully funded mentoring programs in which the mentors are expert teachers who have release time to be in the classroom coaching on a regular basis. It's really important for beginners to have systematic, intense mentoring in the first year.

Having weekly support and in-classroom coaching in the first year for fine-tuning skills, for planning lessons, and for problem solving about things that come up in the classroom ensures that someone experienced is there during the critical moments of the beginning teacher's first year. That is the ideal way to make sure beginning teachers don't just survive but also become competent and effective—and stay in the profession. 25 Killer Websites that Make You Cleverer.

Turk As a new teacher 14 years ago, I received immeasurable guidance and support from my mentor. Many days, I found myself questioning my teaching strategies and asking how to accomplish certain tasks. My mentor always took time from her busy schedule to answer those questions and to offer support. But mentoring, in many ways, is heavily balanced toward a one-way relationship. Thing 11: Mentoring. Importantly however, the most effective way to develop people is quite different from conventional skills training, which let's face it many employees regard quite negatively. They'll do it of course, but they won't enjoy it much because it's about work, not about themselves as people. The most effective way to develop people is instead to enable learning and personal development, with all that this implies.

Adult Mentoring The belief that the development of an adolescent can change for the better with the guidance of a mature and wiser adult is not new. What is new is the belief that these types of relationships can and will change the attitudes and behaviours of violent youth. Supporters of mentorship argue that early intervention can prevent violence in youth, and as a result, many theorize that proper mentorship can alter violent behaviours (Satchwell, 2006).

This is evident as mentorship programs increasingly emerge in high-risk communities and target at-risk youth (Brown, 2008). In the United States, nearly half of all youth mentoring programs have been established within the past 10 years. The traditional notion of mentorship frequently invokes the positive image of an older, wiser adult providing compassionate guidance to a young individual. Sadly, these naturally occurring relationships are not available to every developing adolescent.

Use It or Lose It: Neuromyths in Education.

It seems that there are many myths in Neuroscience. Many times these “neuromyths” are accepted by teachers as truths and guide their teaching practice claiming that these statements will enhance the teaching and learning process in their classrooms. Far from meaning any harm, teachers are keen to find “recipes” and things that “work”. These neuromyths are perceived as black and white answers to their queries, with which teachers, by their very nature, plunge into their teaching enthusiastically and with good intentions thinking that all their questions have been answered.

Others have been taught to believe them and are deeply ingrained in their belief systems. #mentorevo 2013 participants. Chirbit - Record, Upload and Share Audio Easily - Social Audio.
