Applied Physics and Applied Math. YINQE. Physics and Philosophy < Yale University. Directors of undergraduate studies: John Harris (Physics), 311 WNSL-W, 432-3601, dus.physics@yale.edu; Kenneth Winkler (Philosophy), 406A C, 432-1679, kenneth.winkler@yale.edu Prospective majors in Physics and Philosophy are advised to begin taking the prerequisites during their freshman year, and to take at least two of the required Philosophy courses by the end of their sophomore year.

Physics and Philosophy < Yale University

Prerequisites for this major are as follows: mathematics through calculus at the level of MATH 120; any introductory Physics lecture sequence numbered 170 or higher; PHYS 165L and 166L, or 205L and 206L; one introductory Philosophy course. Beyond the prerequisites, students take fourteen term courses, including the senior requirement. Seven courses in Physics approved by the director of undergraduate studies and numbered 301 or higher are required, including PHYS 301 or equivalent and either PHYS 439 or 440. Number of courses 14 term courses beyond prereqs, incl senior req. Department of Physics. Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program. Mathematics and Philosophy < Yale University. Directors of undergraduate studies: Andrew Casson (Mathematics), 216 LOM, 432-7056, andrew.casson@yale.edu; Kenneth Winkler (Philosophy), 406A C, 432-1679, kenneth.winkler@yale.edu The Mathematics and Philosophy major allows students to explore those areas where philosophy and mathematics meet, in particular, mathematical and philosophical logic and the philosophy of mathematics.

Mathematics and Philosophy < Yale University

The prerequisite for the major is MATH 120. The major requires twelve term courses including the prerequisite, at least four of which must be in Mathematics at the 200 level or higher and five of which must be in Philosophy. All Philosophy courses are eligible for credit toward the major, with the exception of First-Order Logic (PHIL 115).

Senior requirement Each year certain seminars offered by the Mathematics and Philosophy departments are designated as fulfilling the senior requirement of this major. Mathematics and Physics < Yale University. Department of Mathematics. Electrical Engineering and Computer Science < Yale University. Directors of undergraduate studies: Mark Reed (Electrical Engineering), 523 BCT, 432-4306, mark.reed@yale.edu; Stanley Eisenstat (Computer Science), 208 AKW, 432-1246, stanley.eisenstat@yale.edu Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is an interdepartmental major designed for students who want to integrate work in these two fields.

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science < Yale University

It covers discrete and continuous mathematics, algorithm analysis and design, digital and analog circuits, signals and systems, systems programming, and computer engineering. It provides coherence in its core program, but allows flexibility to pursue technical electives. The prerequisites for the major are MATH 112, 115, and ENAS 151 or MATH 120; CPSC 112; and PHYS 180 and 181, or 200 and 201. Acceleration credits may be used to satisfy some of these requirements. Courses taken Credit/D/Fail may not be counted toward the requirements of the major. For students with one term of calculus and no programming experience, a typical program would be: Computer Science and Psychology < Yale University.

Directors of undergraduate studies: Stanley Eisenstat (Computer Science), 208 AKW, 432-1246, stanley.eisenstat@yale.edu; Laurie Santos (Psychology), 213 SSS, 432-4524, psychdus@yale.edu Computer Science and Psychology is an interdepartmental major designed for students interested in integrating work in these two fields.

Computer Science and Psychology < Yale University

Each area provides tools and theories that can be applied to problems in the other. Examples of this interaction include cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and biological perception. The prerequisite for the major is PSYC 110, from which students who have scored 5 on the Advanced Placement test in Psychology are exempt. Beyond the prerequisite, the major requires fourteen term courses as well as a senior project. Computer Science. Cognitive Science. Cognitive science is an interdisciplinary field devoted to exploring the nature of cognitive processes such as perception, reasoning, memory, attention, language, imagery, motor control, and problem–solving.

Cognitive Science

The goal of cognitive science is to understand (1) the representations and processes in our minds that underwrite these capacities, (2) how they are acquired, and how they develop, and (3) how they are implemented in underlying hardware (biological or otherwise). Stated more simply, the goal of cognitive science is to understand how the mind works. The Cognitive Science program at Yale includes an undergraduate major, a graduate student discussion group, a colloquium series directed primarily at faculty and advanced graduate students, and various campus events.

The undergraduate major is open to students by application only. Applications are due at the end of Fall semester of the applicant’s Sophomore year. Join our mailing list here. Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry. Artistic rendering of dengue virus immediately prior to the fusion of the viral lipid membrane (bottom) to the endosomal membrane of the host cell (top).

Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry

Two dengue virus envelope protein trimers are shown (in surface representation) on either side of a nascent membrane fusion stalk. Completion of membrane fusion requires the alpha-helical “stem” regions (shown in worm representation) to anneal onto the core of the E trimers. The image is based on crystal structures of dengue virus E protein in the postfusion conformation determined in the Modis Laboratory. Image created by Janet Iwasa and Gaël McGill, Digizyme, Inc.
