Cloud storage is a model of networked online storage where data is stored in virtualized pools of storage which are generally hosted by third parties. Hosting companies operate large data centers, and people who require their data to be hosted buy or lease storage capacity from them. The data center operators, in the background, virtualize the resources according to the requirements of the customer and expose them as storage pools, which the customers can themselves use to store files or data objects. Physically, the resource may span across multiple servers.

Gegründet durch George Olsen , Glenn Davis und Jeffrey Zeldman im Jahr 1998 war das Ziel der Entwickler, führende Browserhersteller wie etwa Microsoft mit dem Internet Explorer davon zu überzeugen, die definierten Standards, darunter auch HTML , Cascading Stylesheets und ECMAScript , einzuhalten. Nachdem die Unterstützung der Standards seitens der Hersteller immer weiter befolgt wurde, versteht sich die Organisation heute als bildende und lehrende Organisation.

Das World Wide Web Consortium (kurz W3C ) ist das Gremium zur Standardisierung der das World Wide Web betreffenden Techniken. Es wurde am 1. Oktober 1994 am MIT Laboratory for Computer Science in Cambridge (Massachusetts) gegründet. Gründer und Vorsitzender des W3C ist Tim Berners-Lee , der auch als der Erfinder des World Wide Web bekannt ist.
