Blogs in Plain English - Common Craft - Our Product is Explanation

To make sense of blogs, you have to think about the news and who makes it. We'll look at news in the 20th vs. the 21st century to make our point. In the 20th century, the news was produced professionally. When news happened, reporters wrote the stories and a tiny group of people decided what appeared in a newspaper or broadcast. Professional news was mainstream: general and limited. The 21st century marked the point where news became both professional and personal. http://www.commoncraft.com/video/blogs

2011 has been a roller coaster of a year. It started out with Shawn getting laid off from Microsoft in January 2011. But since I.T. had been tearing him up inside and things were pretty stable with my teaching gig, I told him that I would be happy to support him while he chased a dream… We both have this little fantasy of owning a bed and breakfast when we ‘retire’ so I figured that owning some kind of restaurant would be an important stepping stone to that dream. So Shawn started researching and planning. http://www.blog2007.sheba-kitty-productions.com/

"The result was this amazing, organic discussion that ranged from debates over whether or not a sequel exists to one book, to speculation about posthumous publications from J.D. Salinger." "Campus makes it so simple to set up a separate blog for individuals and keep the management of the blog under one administrator. Edublogs has been a great company to work with." http://edublogs.org/

Edublogs - teacher and student blogs

http://drdial.edublogs.org/2010/12/01/adult-learning-what-role-do-you-play/#comment-106 One of the tougher tasks I’ve had to accomplish as I’ve taken the leadership road is that of providing professional development for adult learners. I never thought about it as a teacher, but I can now say I truly appreciate the work of folks who provide quality professional development for groups of educators. You see…we educators are a tough crowd. You would think that folks who spend their days educating K-12 students would in turn be model students in a professional development setting. I figured out very quickly that wasn’t the case once I stepped into the world of education as a teacher and then an administrator. This isn’t because teachers and principals are bad students.

My kindergarten team hides six eggs per child. We write their first and last name on each of their six eggs. During the egg hunt - they have to find their eggs. Mrs. Mendoza (one of my colleagues) separates the eggs by color, putting the same candy in each specific color. Then she tell her kindergartners to find their name on each of the six colors. http://www.fairydustteaching.blogspot.com/

Art at the Center

Art at the Center is an art studio designed specifically for children and their families. We emphasize the use of natural and recycled materials as well as traditional art media. The studio is a learning laboratory where experimentation is encouraged and students can practice thinking skills and problem solving as they engage in projects. The arts are seen as languages for children to express their ideas, working both individually and collaboratively in a group setting. The studio environment is designed to provoke curiosity and wonder and to encourage active engagement with the materials and with each other. Peer feedback and building relationships is a key part of the creative and learning process.

On January 12 our Art Focus Group met for a focus on block play. It was met with great enthusiasm by all participants. We began with a simple exercise designed to encourage focus, concentration and non-verbal communication. Pairs were seated at a table with a sheet of paper and identical sets of blocks. Builders took turns building and following, with the only requirement being that they pair not speak - they were to use non-verbal communication to lead and follow.
The ArtsCollab is part of ISKME's efforts to connect social collaboration and knowledge sharing with the use of and awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER). We are working to identify collaborative and technical skills and behaviors that deepen engagement with curricular resources, media, and tools, through sharing with peers and communities, in this case, in the arts. Our project in this area, "Field Building in the Arts and Social Justice: Engaging Teachers, Learners, and Practitioners in the Collaborative Development and Use of Open Educational Resources", launched in 2009, involves the development of practitioner professional development workshops, research-based training model, and partner networking around advancing arts integration with the use of OER, supported by the Ford Foundation's Knowledge, Creativity, and Freedom Program.
