The virtual library commons should connect students to the tools that they need to see their way through the research process. From sources for copyright-friendly images and music files to avatar-makers, the virtual library can bring together a toolbox for learning. My own virtual library story: When the Web began, it quickly occurred to me that my service, as well as my instruction, could be more effective and better scaled if our library had two front doors. But she didn't visit her small-town New Hampshire library. Instead, Woodruff tapped the country's largest collection, the Library of Congress, from her personal computer. At the library's Web site, Woodruff was able to search a digitized collection of books, music, and video clips, browse databases, and reference prepared lesson plans.
