Who is Rocking Twitter? :: Raynforest :: Since June 2010, runners David Hylton and Scott Miles have led the Twitter chat #RunChat, a conversation about a wide range of running topics. The chat has grown from a few dozen to several hundred participants each week. In part I of my conversation with David, he explained how Scott and he got the idea and how they grew the chat into weekly event that now attracts sponsors from established companies to start-ups. Now, David talks about the challenges that come with the growth of the enterprise. Q: How do you keep the conversations fresh? A: That’s truly a battle that we face. Let’s say we want to talk about marathon training. Q: How about tying the chats in with a theme? A: We’ve never themed a chat until about a year ago. One thing that’s most engaging is when we ask people to share advice and lessons learned.

Q: Have you experienced steady growth, or have there been some spikes here and there? We didn’t bring that entire group together. Q: What did you do after the Boston bombing? How I learned what I didn’t know I already knew about #Facebook from @HotLou by @LinkedInDiva. The question in the crowded room was “Why is Hot Lou called ‘Hot Lou’?” …until he opened his mouth and started describing how he (with a college degree in computer science and math) made thousands of Facebook pages incredibly successful through learning how to engage people and then scale. Yes, ‘Hot Lou’ is the mastermind behind the first ecommerce page on Facebook (1-800-Flowers); creator of the Ultimate Frizbee page with 150,000 fans (most in the US and the country of Columbia); and, manager of the immensely popular Twig the Fairy page with more than 271,000 likes.

(Twig is actually a human dressed as a fairy who works regional Renaissance fairs around the country. But now she’s got her own product line inspired by the popularity of her Facebook posts!) What I discovered what I already knew about Facebook, as Lou shared his insights and inspired us with stories of his success was simple: Authentic Engagement.
