EmailShare Film fans were delighted and befuddled by the recent announcement that THE HOBBIT, J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic fantasy book about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, would be made into a trilogy by filmmaker Peter Jackson instead of being released as a pair of films as originally planned. Shortly after Peter Jackson posted the news on his Facebook page, the Internet responded with mixed reactions.

After all, THE HOBBIT is a much shorter tale than Tolkien’s three book epic, LORD OF THE RINGS. We at rbb had our own heated discussions on this topic, some of us siding with Jackson’s decision, others taking a more suspicious perspective. 693424868.jpg (531×547) Trilogy-Meter.jpg (500×650) Hobbit-Film-Making-Facts-Infographic-Design.jpg (1015×959) Hobbit-unexpected-cruelty-peta2.png (612×1008) The Boston Globe’s exquisitely detailed ‘Hobbit’ movie preview. At a pivotal point in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, our hero encounters Gollum, the haggard creature moviegoers will recognize from the director’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Though Gollum is 60 years younger in The Hobbit (in theaters Dec. 14), he is already torn between his desire to be good and his dark addiction to a certain bijou. His cooing over his “precious” is hauntingly familiar. The biggest difference between Gollums: in The Hobbit, he looks more grotesquely human, more real, than ever before. Gollum was conjured using an animation technique known as performance capture or motion capture.

Special cameras recorded actor Andy Serkis’ movements and expressions, from froggy hops to conflicted scowls. Computers instantly translated that visual data into a rough draft of the final creation, which Jackson could watch and direct in real time.
