How Big Bang Theory Got the OK to Mock Zachary Quinto's Spock
Friday, January 20, 2012 Fox’s “American Idol” took a hit from CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” Thursday night when the comedy outpointed the talent giant among younger audiences. For the first time ever, “Big Bang” — or any CBS show, for that matter — drew more viewers in the 18-to-49 category than “American Idol.” It was a slim margin, no doubt, with a mere 10th of a ratings point separating “Bang” from “Idol” in the 18-to-49-year-old category in the half hour the two shows went head-to-head.

There's an asterisk here, of course: "Bang" beat "Idol" in young adult demos, which is where it hurts most. But in total viewers, "Idol" pulled out a win: 17.7 million viewers to 15.7 million. Another possible asterisk: Fox says it actually tied. CBS says no, it won.

Whenever a show does any sort of dream sequence, there’s always a risk fans will be unhappy to see that any progress made in the alt-world doesn’t impact the “real” world. But rest assured, THE BIG BANG THEORY fans, that’s not the case for last night’s 100th episode dream sequence. “It does not fail to move the series story forward,” THE BIG BANG THEORY co-creator Bill Prady promised. “It does not exist separately from the series.”Happy 100th episode, THE BIG BANG THEORY! Yes, our favorite nerds are celebrating the big 1-0-0, and when I hit up the party celebrating the big milestone, I couldn’t resist asking series stars Simon Helberg (Howard), Kunal Nayyar (Raj), Mayim Bialik (Amy), and Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) what fans could expect from the episode… Poor Jim Parsons (Sheldon) was really sick when the cast was celebrating reaching episode 100, but he was game enough to share his own little tease about the episode. “Oddly enough, Sheldon is quintessential Sheldon in the episode,” Parsons said. “There is no growth, he springs no surprises. And honestly, any affect he has on the outcome of that episode is purely accidental on his part.

Now, as the show prepares to unspool its 100th episode, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the cast and creators to discuss their favorite nerd moments on the series, and the results are everything you’d expect: The Lord of the Rings , Leonard Nimoy and Star Trek references as well as Bollywood dances and yes, The Justice League. “When Penny gave Sheldon a napkin signed by Leonard Nimoy that he had wiped his mouth with and Sheldon now had his DNA and could clone him. He was so overcome with affection for her, he physically hugged her, which he can’t do as a character.
