How? That would be a new process for extracting oil from algae that cleans and uses less water, while creating energy from hydrogen during the process. But their projects are primarily off shore, because the US is not embracing a green economy. Technology “You can’t just strain algae out of the water,” says Riggs Eckelberry, President and CEO of OriginOil. “You can use centrifuge, steam, and other energy intensive stuff, which is good when you’re selling for $50/pound, but when you’re trying to beat the price of gasoline, you can’t do it that way.” http://www.thegreeneconomy.com/originoil-plans-to-disrupt-the-oil-industry/

Prosperity without Growth? - The transition to a sustainable economy · Sustainable Development Commission

http://www.sd-commission.org.uk/publications.php?id=914 Our economy is geared, above all, to achieving growth. In times of recession especially, economic policy is all about returning to growth. But a financial crisis can also be an opportunity for some basic rethinking about what the economy is for, and how through some fundamental restructuring of our financial system we can safeguard our economic stability in the future, as well as achieving wider social and environmental benefits. In recent years, other objectives such as sustainability and wellbeing have moved up the political agenda. Over two years, the SDC's Redefining Prosperity project looked into the connections and conflicts between sustainability, wellbeing and growth.

MIT Unveils Flexible Solar Cells Printed on Paper | Inhabitat - Green Design Will Save the World

We’ve seen several different examples of printable solar cells in the past, however MIT engineers just unveiled a new type of cell that can be printed onto paper or fabric. The flexible photovoltaic cells are not energy intensive to produce and they can be folded over 1,000 times without any loss of performance. The technology was officially published today in the journal Advanced Materials by Professor of Electrical Engineering Vladimir Bulović and several other students. Instead of creating solar cells by exposing substrates to liquids or high temperatures, the team has developed a process that can produce solar cells on ordinary paper or cloth using ‘gentle’ conditions. The solar cells are formed by placing five layers of material onto a single sheet of paper in successive passes. http://inhabitat.com/mit-unveils-flexible-solar-cells-that-can-be-printed-on-paper/
