Greenpeace out to sea on GM rice issue, bioethicist says

Greenpeace, perhaps best known for its battles at sea to protect whales and the oceans, has gotten itself involved in a huge controversy over genetically modified food. The group is charging that unsuspecting children were put at risk in a “dangerous” study of genetically engineered rice in rural China. It’s a serious claim, because it is putting research seeking to put more nutrition into food at risk.

Genetically engineered rice has the potential to help solve a big nutritional problem—vitamin A deficiency. A lack of vitamin A kills 670,000 kids under 5 every year and causes 250,000 to 500,000 to go blind. Research involving children is often highly controversial. That is the charge Greenpeace is screaming ethical bloody murder about. Greenpeace does not favor the use of genetic engineering to modify food. Ariane: Quand l’alterjournalisme rencontre l’alterscience. Ce billet porte sur une vieille affaire, remontant à 2007.

Ariane: Quand l’alterjournalisme rencontre l’alterscience

Why Are Environmentalists Taking Anti-Science Positions? by Fred Pearce. 22 Oct 2012: Opinion by fred pearce From Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring to James Hansen’s modern-day tales of climate apocalypse, environmentalists have long looked to good science and good scientists and embraced their findings.

Why Are Environmentalists Taking Anti-Science Positions? by Fred Pearce

Often we have had to run hard to keep up with the crescendo of warnings coming out of academia about the perils facing the world. A generation ago, biologist Paul Ehrlich’s The Population Bomb and systems analysts Dennis and Donella Meadows’ The Limits to Growth shocked us with their stark visions of where the world was headed. No wide-eyed greenie had predicted the opening of an ozone hole before the pipe-smoking boffins of the British Antarctic Survey spotted it when looking skyward back in 1985. And yet, recently, the environment movement seems to have been turning up on the wrong side of the scientific argument. That should hurt. The issue is not which side environmentalists should be on, but rather the mind-set behind their positions.

We cannot ignore that. Argumentum ad Monsantium. It’s my favorite new logical fallacy, the “Appeal to Monsanto”, the world’s largest producer of biotech agriculture seeds.

Argumentum ad Monsantium

This is the logic that compels many anti-GMO activists to reply to any argument in support of biotech crops with “So you love Monsanto?” It’s so wonderful because it combines many other logical fallacies into one, and is thus a great time saver. Greenpeace ou Le mythe de Frankeinstein... So Why Did So Many Reporters and NGOs Botch Coverage, Yet Again? The Yes Men and the inside story of #ShellFail. Last Thursday somebody on Youtube called "kstr3l" posted a video from his phone of a Shell PR event gone horribly, hilariously wrong.

the Yes Men and the inside story of #ShellFail

By Friday afternoon it had already been watched 500,000 times, and was making the rounds with the tag #ShellFAIL. Then journalists who had covered the story received a threatening email to cut it out, calling the whole thing an environmental activist hoax and directing people to a website about the company's arctic oil drilling plans. The event was a hoax, and so was the follow-up email and the website with its often hilarious-if-it-wasn't-true fake Shell marketing copy. From the ArcticReady.com homepage: "That's why we at Shell are committed to not only recognize the challenges that climate change brings, but to take advantage of its tremendous opportunities. And what's the biggest opportunity we've got today? This is the backstory. But something went horribly, hilariously wrong.

Greenpeace And Their Policy Of Lies And Deceit « Tory Aardvark. Greenpeace activists shut down Shell petrol stations earlier this week as part of their fabircated campaign of lies and deceit aimed at stopping exploration of the Arctic On Monday 16th July Greenpeace activists briefly shutdown a number of Shell petrol stations in London an Edinburgh, as a protest at Shells plans to prospect for oil in the Arctic.

Greenpeace’s Sara Ayech said: “The oil giant Shell is preparing, for the first time, to unleash a drilling fleet of huge vessels upon the fragile and beautiful Arctic, home of the polar bears. No Green prophecy of environmental Armageddon in the Arctic would be complete without involving Ursus Maritimus, not only is Anthropogenic Global Warming killing off the polar bear in Green reality world, it is also making polar bears shrink.

If Greenpeace can lie this easily, why should I believe it on any subject?

Ruth Davis, the senior policy adviser at Greenpeace UK, is quoted in The Guardian about the deferral of a vote in the European Parliament on whether to increase the EU’s emissions reduction target from 20 to 30 per cent. Here is what she says: This vote was postponed after the prime minister personally intervened so that those opposing a higher climate target could no longer count on the support of his party. The politicians backing dirty industries realised they would lose in their bid to scupper moves towards a greener Europe, and they had no option but delay. Her statement is – there is no way of putting this gently – a lie. My point isn’t really about the emissions target. No, my point has to do with the sheer flagrancy of Greenpeace’s deceit.

Fight over canola pits biofuels vs. organics. Fight over canola pits biofuels vs. organics JONATHAN J. COOPERAssociated Press SALEM, Ore. — Wet winters and cool, dry summers make Oregon's Willamette Valley one of the best places on the globe to produce seeds for organic broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and a variety of other vegetables known as brassicas. That means the fields south of Portland are also an ideal place to grow canola, another brassica whose seeds can be pressed to extract oil for food or renewable fuel.

But you won't find any canola here. Blanchiment : Florence Lamblin n'a pas "pensé que c'était de l'argent sale" Blanchiment : l’embarrassante fortune de l’élue écologiste parisienne.
