Jim Reed: Extreme Weather Photographer. Since we're now on the same team as far as corporate ownership goes, we're excited to begin featuring some of Popular Photography's amazing work here PopSci.com, starting with this piece on weather-junkie Jim Reed and the story behind his beautiful photographs. --Eds. Jim Reed's passion for extreme weather photography has put him in harm's way more than once. Extreme Instability: Nebraska Sand Hills Monster Supercell Storm Very intense high precipitation supercell storm moves south in the Nebraska Sand Hills south of Valentine, July 13, 2009. Very low, long and fat inflow cloud stretches east of the storm. Winds gusted upwards of 60+ mph into this storm. Tornado warning with the storm mentioned baseball size hail and winds in excess of 100 mph, a rare warning text indeed. As intense of a storm as it was, it only produced one short-lived small tornado. Traffic heading north up highway 83 would be driving right into the storm’s forward flank downdraft, which contained large hail and intense rain.

I have been in love with tornadoes, hurricanes, strong storms, clouds and just about anything weather related since I was a kid. The one thing I strongly dislike about extreme weather is the unfortunate fatalities that are usually associated with them. But, with that aside, bad weather can bring some remarkable photos along with it. All images contained in this article are not mine but are works of their original owners.

Jan 25, 2012 A maelstrom is a very powerful whirlpool; a large, swirling body of water. A free vortex, it has considerable downdraft. The power of tidal whirlpools tends to be exaggerated by laymen. There are virtually no stories of large ships ever being sucked into a maelstrom, although smaller craft are in danger and tsunami generated maelstroms may even threaten larger crafts. Tales like those by Paul the Deacon, Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe are entirely fictional. One of the earliest uses of the Scandinavian word was by Edgar Allan Poe in his story “A Descent into the Maelstrom” (1841).
