Enough of the Emails: Is Resistance Futile? When questioned one too many times about Hillary Clinton’s email transgressions, an exasperated Bernie Sanders exclaimed to his opponent, “The American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails!” Like it or not, we’ll be hearing ever more about them as Hillary’s woes potentially deepen in light of the recent FBI investigation as well as the hacking of one of her volunteers’ emails accounts. It’s enough for all of us, across the political spectrum, to question how, when and why we rely on this mainstay of communication in our own professional and personal lives. Is email doing us more harm than good? If so, can we go against the grain and minimize its role in our lives?
Grand statements of the demise of email and one of its elemental aspects—the written word—have long been exaggerated. Nonetheless, the flaws of email as a contemporary means of conveying messages, whether they be animated or static, visual or aural, are clear. SnapComms interviewed several IC experts to hear first-hand about their biggest challenge, and the ubiquitous problem of employees not listening, aka information overload. The global workplace changed forever when e-mail as a communication medium was introduced in the early 1990s. Ease of use, speed of distribution and almost zero cost led to its universal appeal. Fast forward to modern times, the number of e-mails sent and received per day totals over 205 billion in 2015.
The average worker receives approximately 122 e-mails per day -- approximately 15 e-mails every working hour. These figures are expected to rise at an average annual rate of 5% over the next four years. Ironically, its popularity has made e-mail a victim of its own success: with so much traffic arriving in inboxes, there’s a risk that critical communications – such as compliance – are getting lost in the noise. Increasingly, staff are suffering from "infobesity," finding it difficult to understand an issue due to information overload. Communication experts maintain that the e-mail format will continue to be popular, but more dynamic and engaging styles of message delivery are needed. Home textiles company Gabel, based in the northern Como region, commissioned an expert to interview its employees about what their main concerns were at work, the local La Provincia di Como website reports. Many said that managing the huge volume of internal correspondence was a burden during the working day. That prompted the company's management to propose a solution, which - somewhat ironically - was sent to all staff in an email. "Together we will begin the following experiment, which will take us back in time to when people talked more," managing director Emilio Colombo wrote, declaring an "email free" week until 13 November. "We invite you not to use email for internal communications (between colleagues at the same location), in favour of a more direct and immediate contact.

How is it that some people remain calm as unread messages trickle into their inboxes and then roost there unattended, while others can’t sit still knowing that there are bolded-black emails and red-dotted Slack messages? This has led me to a theory that there are two types of emailers in the world: Those who can comfortably ignore unread notifications, and those who feel the need to take action immediately.
So what puts people in one camp or the other? After interviewing several people about their relationship with email, Mark has noticed that, for some people, email is an extension of autonomy—it's about having control. Stop Bad Email," show that while middle managers typically spend 2.5 work weeks (100 hours) a year on irrelevant email, they don't want their ability to use email taken away or interrupted at any time of the day or night. They do, however, want policies that could help reduce the overwhelming volume of irrelevant email. Findings reveal: Executives (84 percent), middle managers (83 percent), and employees (77 percent) overwhelmingly agree email is an effective and necessary communication tool.
