Despite the increasing numbers of Tibetans self-immolating and general unrest in the region, the issues facing Tibetans are still on the fringes of Australian political and media discourse. In 2011, the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China recommended continued engagement with international governments to ensure that inherent human rights are not abused. Concern was raised again in 2012 when the United Nations human rights chief called on China to address the allegations of human rights violations in Tibet. Human rights are nice, but they shouldn't be enshrined in law. North Korea is outraged over an upcoming conference in Washington DC about its human rights abuses, to which it has not been invited.
