When clouds play tricks with your mind, forming UFO shapes which startle and confuse. By Eddie Wrenn Published: 09:18 GMT, 29 May 2012 | Updated: 10:52 GMT, 29 May 2012 We feel prepared to go out on a limb and say none of these images are of flying saucers. But since mankind first gazed up and saw one of these clouds float past, their uniform and tight circular shapes have caused wonder, curiosity - and even fear - in the eyes of their beholder. The clouds look so artificial that, over the course of history, they may well have prompted early thoughts about visitors from space.

Instead, these are lenticular clouds - smooth, tightly-bordered circular formations that form high in the atmosphere over the tops of mountains, before drifting off to prompt curiosity in those that behold them. By Daily Mail Reporter Published: 01:08 GMT, 20 September 2012 | Updated: 16:15 GMT, 20 September 2012 Capturing bolts of lighting as they streak across the night sky is a difficult process that requires a lot of patience. But photographer Mike Olbinski obviously has the patience of a saint as these array of stunning pictures showing the split-second moment a lightning bolt hits the ground prove.

Mr Olbinski used a long exposure using a DSLR to capture these amazing patterns of electrostatic sparks across the sky. Bolt out of the blue: Photographer Mike Olbinski captured this incredible picture of a lightning bolt striking south Tucson during thunder storms earlier this month Lightning only strikes trice: This startling image during a thunderstorm in downtown Phoenix shows three bolts of lightning striking the city Lighting up the night: Mike Olbinski uses a long exposure DSLR lens to capture these beautiful images He said: 'I have pictures of clouds I took while in high school. Ken Rotberg spotted unusual phenomenon as sun dropped behind a storm cloud in the early evening Rare sight also known as a 'circumhorizon arc' By Shari Miller Published: 10:15 GMT, 15 August 2012 | Updated: 12:15 GMT, 15 August 2012 Looking up into the night sky, a stunned photographer realised he had seen something special when he captured these amazing pictures.

What perhaps looks like a multi-coloured flying saucer is in fact a rare weather phenomenon known as a 'fire rainbow cloud'. The series of photographs were taken by Ken Rotberg as the cloud hovered over south Florida, America. Mr Rotberg had just returned home from a game of tennis when he saw the odd sight as the sun dropped behind a storm cloud near Delray Beach in the early evening. Burning bright: The rare phenomenon appeared behind a storm cloud near Delray Beach, Florida The 49-year-old said: 'I grabbed my camera and headed out. 'Then the saucers appeared. 'I was just amazed at what I was witnessing, watching it slowly change.

Rare phenomenon gives airplane a heavenly glow. By Sara Malm Published: 10:25 GMT, 9 August 2012 | Updated: 14:47 GMT, 9 August 2012 A photographer managed to catch the spectacular moment when the plane he was travelling on appeared surrounded by a rainbow halo. The shadow of the airplane upon the clouds is encircled by a perfectly round rainbow in what looks like a digitally altered image.

However Alexey Zolotnycyn’s photographs have not been touched by Photoshop but capture a rare natural phenomenon. Glorious: The shadow of the plane is shown on the thick clouds below with a bright rainbow halo surrounding it Brocken spectre, also known as Brocken bow or mountain spectre, it is the apparently enormous and magnified shadow of an observer or object, cast upon the upper surfaces of clouds opposite the sun.

The 'head' or point of the shadow is often surrounded by rings of coloured light – the rainbow halo - caused by light diffraction. ‘I have been taking photos since I was a child, and I always keep my camera handy. 800px_polarlicht_22. Hyperlapse00_640x4002. Np22. Fire. Image52.
