What are the differences? Another key issue is funding & support for MOOCs: they began as free, open, non-credit courses, but some have begun to develop financial relationships with university systems <--as in California? Must check this--> selling their services and allowing students in the system to earn credit hours. This brings up another issue: the credit hour versus competency based learning. Will MOOCs become just another credit hour program? Or will they become a force that recognizes and supports competency based learning? At this point, then, we have 4 issues to address: 1) growth of MOOCs; 2) pedagogical/andragogical foundations; 3) financial support; & 4) their role - if any - in the credit hour versus competency debate.
Together, we can create a powerful analysis of the role of MOOCs in higher education today. What does the team think?
