Yet the MOOCs featured in the media are quite different from the original concept. One co-founder of the first MOOC, Stephen Downes, came up with the terms ‘xMOOC’ and ‘cMOOC’ to distinguish between classes modeled on his and the form that has become better known since then. The Coursera and edX platforms that have grabbed the spotlight recently are examples of xMOOCs. For the last three years I’ve been one of the UKOER Synthesis and Evaluation Team (led by Glasgow Caledonian University with Professor Allison Littlejohn, Dr Isobel Falconer and Helen Beetham (also an independent consultant). The UKOER programme has investigated many aspects of OER release and use and detailed discussion of this is available in both the synthesis wiki and the OER infoKit. Watch out for some other posts about synthesis reports for the latest phase (phase3) and the HEFCE OER Review, which we’ve recently been working on. For over a year I’ve been working on a guide to help people understand the terminology around OER release, use, models and benefits and open educational practice (OEP) that aims to shed a bit of light on how the different terms relate to each other.

I raised the possibility earlier this month in response to a study about private college enrollment and financial aid. I return to the theme now because of more new research on enrollment not just in private colleges and universities, but across the board, including publics and for-profits. The news is spotty, but could be a milestone. The gist is that American college and university enrollment has been declining, slightly, over the past two and one half years, according to the National Student Clearinghouse ( full report pdf ).
