Barbie Bungee iMovies – Line of Best Fit

Barbie Bungee was my favorite activity of all times. There is nothing more exciting then seeing seeing if your Barbie is going to come crashing to the ground. The students learned so much and we ALL had a blast! I’m not an iMovie expert, but I learned much more about it by making this movie. The text moves way too fast – I wanted stationary text but it kept cutting it off. I told them they could make an iMovie if they wanted to – totally optional.

I haven’t used that phrase in a while, but it seems to be making a comeback through the Math Twitterverse. I’m on board. It perfectly describes my thoughts after my first block classes Thursday and Friday this week. We used a new app from Riley Lark (the ActiveGrade dude) called ActivePrompt (which is apparently a working title, real name TBA) and it works like this. Here’s what we did with it: I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this. Both classes started by making two vertical lines. Since that was too easy, I next told them to create two more parallel lines that were neither vertical nor horizontal. This video clip shows one student explaining the slope concept to another. One of the classes realized that it would have been quicker to simply give each group an equation (same slope different y-intercept) and then generate the points to graph the equation by giving each group member a number.

My favorite thing about this activity was that there were so few rules. Without Geometry, Life is Pointless: A Truly Group Project. My fellow 6th grade math teacher and I are trying something crazy this week.

Without Geometry, Life is Pointless: A Truly Group Project

We were two weeks into our counting/probability unit and wanted a project that would:Help students practice the foundational skills and conceptsPush students to explore more challenging, unfamiliar, open-ended problemsReiterate the importance of group workReiterate the importance of writing down solutions, reasoning, and explanations in an organized fashion. So our crazy new idea? We've put together four open ended, challenging probability games. Eight groups of 3 or 4 will spend tomorrow working on one of these games (2 groups for each game in each class). On Tuesday, groups will rotate and work on a different game, starting where the previous group left off.

The hope is that, as an entire group, we make significant progress on each of the four problems. Yahtzee: Investigate the probabilities associated with this game.
