Enterprise microblogging is better for managing knowledge and cr. People who know me well know my opinion of email. It is one of the best ways for working in silos and losing an organisation's knowledge. People think that blogging is difficult, but it takes just as little effort to send a copy of an email to a blog or wiki (to add to a page that has already been created or to create a new page) as it does to add any other recipient, although you will need to follow up on the wiki page from time to time to do some pruning.

The difference with the blog post or the wiki page, as opposed to an email that was sent to five or six people, not all of whom will read it, is that the information it contains will be available to anybody in the company and searchable. Enterprise microblogging is a great way of creating communities (of practice, or otherwise), especially in large companies. I see that Socialtext have now introduced an enterprise microblogging platform. The prolonged recession has just whittled away at the confidence of our organizations and individuals. It seems as though most people are living with tremendous fear and anxiety while most of the rest are just trying to fake their way through this challenging period. There is a small portion of people really living with confidence during these uncertain, challenging, and tough times. Decide to Thrive and Overcome the Challenges. Posted by Jeff Lucas On Tuesday, Maryland became the first state to formally establish the Benefit Corporation. Described by Business Week as a new corporate form . . . "that will let social entrepreneurs codify their missions in their corporate charters. " The idea of the B Corp has been getting a lot of buzz lately (couldn't resist), but now we will get a chance to see how they will play out in reality. The thinking is that this arrangement will give organizations with primarily socially focused missions a means of attracting and retaining sufficient capital to grow and increase their impact while remaining mission-driven. An example cited in Daniel Pink's book Drive is a North Carolina organization that is buying up abandoned furniture factories, retrofitting them with green technology, and then leasing them back to the struggling domestic furniture industry at low rates.

The issue of backups is always an important one, but something we so often ignore, right up until the moment has passed and it's too late. I have backed up important material onto discs in the past (both CD and DVD), and I have also got data backed up onto several external hard drives. You should also make sure that one of your backups is off site - the distance that I once saw was something like 'double the wing span of a crashed aircraft on your house' which is rather dramatic, but not a figure that you'll forget. Obviously the best place to backup to these days is into the Cloud, and after having a look around I've chosen to go with SquirrelSave which claims to be the UK's #1 service. It's a commercial offering, costing around £60 a year, but it's all automated and works entirely in the background, which is exactly what I wanted.

I also have an unlimited amount of space, which is just as well, given that I'm backing up rather a lot. Preparing for the Synaptic Web | MyST Blogsite® Years ago (2003 actually) I wrote an article about atomization and virtualization . I penned it because I sensed the web was moving in the direction of smaller and smaller information objects. In fact, MyST services were designed based on this influence - we wanted to make sure that MyST was capable of storing the smallest of information resources. Why? Because the idea of smaller (and smaller) information objects is necessary if the universe of objects is expected to rise dramatically and you hope to be able to find stuff in a continually expanding pile of stuff.

Indeed, we designed MyST to make it possible to find a needle in a big pile of needles. We achieved the goal for small object capture and management; a good example is a Link Property in a blog post. Here are a few signs that the Synaptic Web is emerging: Widgets - lightweight components of functionality that connect numerous information sources and sites. SynapticWeb / FrontPage. Synaptic Web. Stay updated about the Synaptic Web on Twitter via @SynapticWeb The Synaptic Web By Khris Loux, Eric Blantz, Chris Saad and you... The Internet is constantly evolving. As the speed, flexibility and complexity of connections increase exponentially, the Web is increasingly beginning to resemble a biological analog; the human brain. In the brain, neurologists now believe that it is the density and flexibility of the connections between neurons, not simply neurons themselves, which are at the root of intelligence.

Even if the total number of brain cells, or neurons, begins to diminish in early adulthood, our ability to generate new connections between neurons and between different parts of the brain – what neurologist call “plasticity” - persists throughout life. We believe that this evolving view of neural science provides an increasingly apt metaphor for what we call the "Synaptic Web" in that the connections between objects are more important than the objects themselves. Basics of Attention Profiling through APML at CleverClogs. “If you want to inform yourself of the basic principles of attention profiling or need to explain the concept to others then please read on. Feel free to add your clarifications, your conclusions and your constructive criticism to this deliberately non-geek conversation.” In recent months quite a few bloggers covered the growing adoption of APML, a proposed standard for attention profiling.

Those about to give up reading here already, please don’t. I personally found most of these posts delving in rather deep. If you want to inform yourself of the basic principles of attention profiling or need to explain the concept to others then please read on. With today’s post I’d like to make an attempt at writing a layman’s article answering exactly these three questions: What is attention profiling and what are the benefits? As usual, this post concludes with a news radar. Technically attention profiles can be stored, accessed and updated from multiple devices and multiple operating systems. NESTA - Home. Start your own online School. | CloudKnow. As Unemployment Rises, “Service Networking” Startups Find Niche. Wade Roush2/10/09 When a good idea is ready to be born, it can surface in several minds at once. That appears to be what’s happening right now around Boston, as four local Web-based startups launch online marketplaces that match people willing to do small jobs with people who need jobs done. In each case, the founders point to the free-falling economy and ballooning unemployment rates as part of the inspiration and fuel for their experiments.

We’ve told you recently about Assured Labor, a site that lists reviews of service providers such as dog walkers and helps potential clients connect with them. We also took a close look at fixR, a site where clients post information about paving or roofing jobs and the like and contractors submit competing bids. Both companies have global ambitions, but chose Boston to launch beta version of their sites.
