" by Isham Padron What is gMil? gMil is a surface shader for LW that simulates radiosity. After hearing about gMil in the LW7.x feature list I've wondered what use can it give me. This paper shows some of my trial and errors to test the use of this surface shader. This paper also has a collection of thoughts and insight of other people using gMil . . .

A good place to start with a simple Metaformed box. Create a Box in modeler and choose Sub-divide it using Metaform. You activate SubPatch mode by pressing the TAB key. Focus of Tutorial: Create realistic 3D clouds on a planetProgram: Lightwave v9+ (can be applied to other software)Difficulty: Newbie - Moderate - Expert I'm using Lightwave 9.6 for this, but you can use earlier versions of v9 or even other software - the concepts should translate into your 3d program of choice with a little work.

I've uploaded the content used here, this guide only covers the technique - It assumes a basic knowledge of how to use the software - modelling, adding textures, setting up scenes etc, will not be covered. And here is an example of this technique in action: For the purpose of this guide I'm just doing a small square of cloud. Start by creating 20 evenly spaced planes and assigning them all the same surface. Add a weight map to the planes - It needs to fade linearly from the bottom to the top, if you divide 100 by the number of layers you've used, the result is the increment you'll need.

Load the object into a scene and turn on ray trace shadows. Foundation 3D - Spline Cage to Patching. A tutorial Gem by Lewis Getting from spline cages to patching can sometimes be daunting.

If you find yourself wondering how and where to start then Lewis's tutorial Gem is for you. This tutorial Gem is meant as a tip to get you started, you should already be familiar with LightWave in this instance and know your tools. The tutorial was not recorded with sound and was compiled at 2x speed so you will want to slow it down or pause it when you need to see what is happening. For your convenience this tutorial has also been linked to a dedicated thread where Lewis makes himself available to offer addition tips and help should you get stuck. Spline modeling (for me) is the quick and accurate way to get the precise shapes involved in cars or planes down before comitting to polys. This video takes the viewer through creation of the base spline cage using NewTek's LightWave, however, the concepts are the same regardless of what package you use for modeling.

This means that it's perfectly possible, and quite likely, that an AA of 8 combined with the AS system is actually faster than an AA of 7. The AS system, however, is not perfect, as by very nature it cannot resample that which it cannot see from its primary data. It's therefore very important, and this is highly scene and purpose dependent, to give some thought to what your base-AA will be. In most cases, a base AA of 1 will not be sufficient. Small details and fine lines will not be picked up, and subsequently not be anti-aliased (see Hank with fine lines below). As you can see in the image above, when we give Hank some really fine lines on his gorgeously curvaceous body, the AS system misses them if the base-AA is set too low. When do I use Adaptive Sampling, and when do I not?

Currently working at The Dreamvision Company / Character Matters studio as producer of a new short film using Lightwave as their core 3d application. I'm proud to publicly release the free "LightKeys", an enhanced Navigation and Shortcuts System for Lightwave 3D.

LightKeys for Lightwave 3D Released!

It was born out of the need of having similar navigation and item manipulation shortcuts across different 3D applications. As more and more 3D packages and applications adopt the Maya Standard for viewport navigation (Alt+MMB = Pan, Alt+RMB = Zoom), having to switch your mindset to the Lightwave style (Shift+Alt+LMB = Pan, Ctrl+Alt+LMB = Zoom) became a huge hassle for anyone using any other 3D application.

To the point that I've seen many Lightwave experts using the navigation icons in the corner of the viewports, probably just to get away from the "navigation disorientation" that results when you try to switch away from the ubiquitous (and highly intuitive, as a matter of fact) Maya navigation standard. Along the navigation shortcuts change, LightKeys also provides a production-proven shortcuts configuration set with highly increased ergonomy. Showthread. LightWiki.
