Parents love health visitors as a uniquely valuable service. They trust their advice and turn to them easily when they are anxious or concerned about their new child. But Health Visitor numbers have been in freefall. Our 2009 progress report showed huge variations in the number of health visitors up and down the country - County Durham had one health visitor for every 165 children whereas some London health trusts had as few as one health visitor for 800 children.

The British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) is a membership organisation and a registered charity that sets standards for therapeutic practice and provides information for therapists, clients of therapy, and the general public. As the largest professional body representing counselling and psychotherapy in the UK, BACP aim to increase public understanding of the benefits of counselling and psychotherapy, raise awareness of what can be expected from the process of therapy and promote education and/or training for counsellors and psychotherapists. The draft set of proposals for the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) scheme to accredit voluntary registers was presented for consideration to the CHRE Council meeting on 15th November.

March 2012 Scientists want to know whether genetic changes in the H5N1 virus could make it more easily transmissible between people, with the intention of improving public health surveillance for the early detection of potential pandemic strains. Researchers have recently succeeded in creating H5N1 viruses that are more transmissible in mammals than those that occur naturally. This has raised concerns about the risks and safety of such research. WHO is facilitating international discussions to address the issues raised by this research.
